A great deal has happened in Kuala Lumpur, the Malaysian capital, since it was last covered in OJ24. The two
largest operators, Intrakota and Park May’s ‘Cityliner’ subsidiaries in the city (Cityliner and Len Chee Omnibus
Company, 321 and 43 buses respectively) were taken over by the state authority Syarikat Prasarana Negara
Berhad (SPNB) in 2004, mainly as a result of their crippling debts and lack of investment. Later that year a new
state authority, Rangkaian Pengangkutan Integrasi Deras Sdn Bhd, was formed to take over the operation of the
buses and most of the light rail lines. RapidKL was the chosen fleetname. RapidKL has its own subsidiary,
RapidPenang, commencing in July 2007 with 150 new buses in an attempt to improve standards in Penang.
Although by far the largest operator in Kuala Lumpur, RapidKL still has competition from a number of
independents, the largest being Metrobus, Len Seng, Triton and Selangor.
In the past two years RapidKL has obtained a few hundred new buses, revamped the route network and
improved the infrastructure. A route system of hubs and spokes, integrated with the light rail lines, is now in use.
The new buses are mostly of Chinese manufacture although there are also Brazilian-built Mercedes-Benz and
some Volvo B7RLE. A number of the former Intrakota Iveco 480-10-21 have been refurbished but many of the
older vehicles from the mid-1990’s – MAN SL252, PekanRiders, ex-PUTRA Dennis Darts and Cityliner Mercedes-
Benz – have been withdrawn since the arrival of the new buses.
Here we list the vehicles noted on a visit in 6/08 by Ian Lynas, and from other sources. Fleetnumbers have not
been applied to the new RapidKL deliveries although some of the inherited buses were given numbers when
repainted. Kuala Lumpur has its own sightseeing tour using doubledeckers; these are included here.
