You are the owner of a house. Your neighbor has called to say he/she is coming to see you to make some complaints. Write the complaints down so you won’t forget them. Then try to negotiate a peaceful solution and write notes for yourself about what you agreed on (in case there are some problems later with the same neighbor). Ask your neighbor some personal questions to get acquainted, and write notes about that, too. In this particular case, the company was content with the report provided from the assessment as it underlined the validity of their paying for the courses (i.e. students were learning practical skills they could use in their jobs). The data from the task sheets also allowed me to see how well the students could negotiate meaningfully, based on whether or not their notes agreed with what their partner had also written. It is not always necessary to re-invent the wheel when adapting tasks suitable for your classes. If you want to use them for assessment purposes, as I have, then the tasks and sub-skills should reflect classroom practice (working in pairs) and course content (e.g. the function of negotiations for these in-company learners). It is possible to adapt pairwork fluency activities offered by most publishers. In the immortal words of Cole Porter – Experiment! SIGDAY Special Interest Group ETAS SIG Day 2007 12th May 2007 - Kantonsschule Wil The SIG Day 2007 Conference was once again a roaring success. Close to 250 participants from all parts of Switzerland gathered in the Kantonsschule Wil to listen, learn and let themselves be inspired. Although many people are responsible for its success, it was Vanessa Ostertag who took primary responsibility for the local organization. Hats off and sincerest appreciation to Vanessa and her team for an excellent event! Taking a slight deviation from his planned plenary, Dave Willis kick-started the day with a brilliant keynote address on Accuracy, Fluency and Autonomous Learning: A Three- Way Distinction, and was quoted by speakers and participants continuously throughout the day. With twelve different SIGs, it was the widest array of workshops offered at a SIG Day Conference yet – 39 to be exact! The number one pre- and post-conference complaint from participants was the difficulty in choosing which workshop to attend in each of the three session. The collaboration between SIGs which began this year will be expanded on so that in future the quality will not be overshadowed by the quantity of workshops on offer. Please note, too, that the annual timeframe of SIG Day Conferences will be moving from May to September to avoid both national holidays and exam schedules. Be sure to reserve September 20th in your calendar for the 2008 SIG Day Conference to be held in Baden.
