ETAS SIG Day 2007
12th May 2007 - Kantonsschule Wil
The SIG Day 2007 Conference was once
again a roaring success. Close to 250 participants
from all parts of Switzerland gathered
in the Kantonsschule Wil to listen, learn and
let themselves be inspired. Although many
people are responsible for its success, it was
Vanessa Ostertag who took primary responsibility
for the local organization. Hats off and
sincerest appreciation to Vanessa and her
team for an excellent event!
Taking a slight deviation from his planned
plenary, Dave Willis kick-started the day with
a brilliant keynote address on Accuracy,
Fluency and Autonomous Learning: A Three-
Way Distinction, and was quoted by speakers
and participants continuously throughout the
day. Sincerest thanks again to Dave and Oxford
University Press who sponsored his visit,
and to the many other sponsors of workshop
speakers, raffle prizes, and other goodies
enjoyed by the conference participants
including:
A special attraction to ETAS national events
is the tempting book and resource material
display provided by our exhibitors. This year
was no exception and we were pleased the
venue offered these exhibitors an ideal setting
to show off their new and popular offerings:
Cambridge ESOL St. Gallen, Cambridge
University Press, Chadburn Publishing,
CIDEB Publishing-Black Cat, Express
Publishing, Flying Teachers GmbH, Garnet
Education, Hull’s School-International House
Zürich, Langenscheidt KG, Macmillan
Education, Marshall Cavendish, ELT
Oxford University Press, PC Designs,
Pearson Education, Spotlight Verlag GmbH,
Stäheli’s Bookshops Ltd “Interlingua”, Summertown
Publishing, Thomson ELT, and
Winterthur Insurance
Pension Fund Music and Education.
We are also deeply indebted to all the SIG
Coordinators and their guest speakers. With
twelve different SIGs, it was the widest array
of workshops offered at a SIG Day
Conference yet – 39 to be exact! The number
one pre- and post-conference complaint from
participants was the difficulty in choosing
which workshop to attend in each of the three
session. The collaboration between SIGs
which began this year will be expanded on so
that in future the quality will not be overshadowed
by the quantity of workshops on
offer.
Please note, too, that the annual timeframe
of SIG Day Conferences will be moving from
May to September to avoid both national holidays
and exam schedules. Be sure to reserve
September 20th in your calendar for the 2008
SIG Day Conference to be held in Baden.
