Commuter Students Commuter students comprise more than two-thirds of the entire UC San Diego population. Active involvement is an important part of the college experience. Studies have shown that students who are involved in co-curricular activities actually do better in school than those who are not involved. Both UC San Diego and Warren College offer a broad spectrum of services and programs to involve students in educational and co-curricular opportunities. Commuter Student Services and Off-Campus Housing Office The Commuter Student Services Office assists students in making UC San Diego a home away from home. The Office sponsors quarterly events, such as commuter appreciation days. The Off-Campus Housing staff receives and maintains up-to-date rental listings from landlords and homeowners in the community. They also provide samples of tenantlandlord forms, rental agreements, and local rental rate information. Online housing listings and message boards are also available. Several locations on campus are designed specifically for commuters. Warren College offers two commuter lounges: one in the Warren Administration Building (EBU 3B); and The Courtroom, a 24-hour space, located next to the Warren shuttle stop. Childcare The UC San Diego Early Childhood Education Center is open to the children of UC San Diego students, staff, and faculty. There is a limited amount of subsidy available for eligible students. The goal of the Center is to provide a meaningful experience for children 3 months to 5 years of age by offering a child-initiated curriculum that promotes the individual person and a sense of community. The Center’s Infant/Toddler Referral Program also provides information about selecting quality child care and assists parents in locating child care within our network of family home day care providers. For information and/or a wait list application, call (858) 246-0900. The UC San Diego’s Women’s Center provides study space and an area for children to play under parental supervision. Off-Campus Living http://warren.ucsd.edu Non-resident Dining Plan Commuter students, faculty, and staff are able to enjoy the convenience of Triton Cash, which may be purchased through the Online Card Office with your Visa or Mastercard; over the phone at (858) 534-7587; or in person at the Housing, Dining and Hospitality office with cash, check, or credit card. Parking Services A parking permit is required on the main campus 7:00am - 11:00pm, Monday - Friday (unless using a meter or parked in a loading zone for the time specified). Shuttle System Transportation and Parking Services operates shuttle services at UC San Diego. There is shuttle service to the Hillcrest Medical Center, Scripps Institution of Oceanography, Torrey Pines Center, Regents, and East parking lots, and Coaster Rail-Train in Sorrento Valley. The Campus Loop shuttle provides service every 10-20 minutes. Loop service begins at 7:00am and operates until 12:00 midnight, Monday through Friday and 9:00am - 8:00pm on weekends. All shuttle services are free of charge. Some services operate year-round and some during the academic quarters only. In addition, there is a disabled transportation service for faculty, staff, and students who are unable to use the regular shuttle services. Most of the shuttle buses are lift-equipped; however, to ensure accessibility from any UC San Diego shuttle stop, call (858) 534-6282, 8:00am - 4:30pm to make reservations (24-hour notice requested). GO GREEN! Transportation Alternatives Holiday Shuttles The holiday airport shuttle takes reservations for Thanksgiving, Winter, and Spring Break. For more information, see www.parking.ucsd.edu or call (858) 534-7433. Carpools/Carpool Club Carpools can be a convenient and fun way to reduce gasoline consumption, driving costs, and air pollution. In addition to saving a substantial sum of money and wear and tear on a car, carpooling offers freedom from the hassles of commuting and a chance to meet and socialize with students who live in your neighborhood. If you form a permanent carpool, you may be eligible for a free parking permit in reserved carpool spaces. Coaster Club The Coaster train links Oceanside and downtown San Diego. UC San Diego operates a Coaster Shuttle service that makes five morning and five evening runs. The Coaster Club offers its members incentives such as limited complimentary parking and emergency rides home. See the parking website for details. Vanpool Program Students who are at least 10% employed by UC San Diego are eligible to participate in the UC San Diego Vanpool Program. For more Warren Transfer & Commuter Commission (WTCC) WTCC assists transfer students in their transition to life at Warren College and provides social opportunities for transfers and commuters to meet one another. All-Campus Commuter Board (ACCB) ACCB serves campus commuter students by providing programming and social opportunities for commuters to connect. All-Campus Transfer Association (ACTA) ACTA is designed to provide transfer student with information and opportunities for transfer students to connect. ACTA coordinates social programs, encourages involvement in university life, and advocates for transfers by generating awareness of transfer issues. Website: http://transfer.ucsd.edu/. Villagers Initiating Progress (VIP) Villagers Initiating Progress (VIP) is a group of students working to make the Village the best place to live. VIP works with Village administration giving feedback and ideas for improvement. The group also plans activities in and around the Village. Free Bus Pass for Selected Routes/Discount Passes/ Transit Club Several bus routes serve the UC San Diego community. Present a UC San Diego photo I.D. card with a FREE Bus Zone sticker attached when boarding a bus. Bus stickers can be obtained at the campus parking office. The FREE Bus Zone sticker allows students to ride on selected routes serving the UC San Diego area. Maps and information are available at the campus parking office. Bicycle Registration/Pedal Club Cyclists who commit to riding for most of their commute to UCSD and obtain a California Bicycle Registration, available for $6.00 from the UC San Diego Police Department, are eligible to join the Pedal Club. Zipcar Program If you bike, carpool, or take public transportation but sometimes need a car, sign up for a Zipcar memership and you can reserve a car for personal use, online or over the phone, for one hour or one day.
