Feature | Illawarra Primary SchoolLocated on the banks of the Derwent River, the two level buildingcapitalises on its idyllic location. The uncompromising finish of thebuilding boasts modern street appeal and compliments the preexistingadjoining classroom buildings.The upper level consists of four general learning areas, eachseparated by an operable wall or timber framed glazed door.The inclusion of such doors promotes learning facilities, that arehighly functional and adaptable to the needs of students andteaching staff. Each ‘pair’ of classrooms has access to a staff office,a withdrawal area and a wet area, complete with kitchen. Premiumquality commercial aluminium windows throughout the upper andlower levels provide panoramic views of the Derwent River from thenorthern elevation and views of the landscaped internal courtyardto the south of the building.The lower level consists mainly of two larger open planned areas,including a resource room and a storage area, but also contains adata room and toilet facilities. The unique design of the lower levelwill accommodate for future development of the area and allows forthe possibility of a further four learning areas.Tasmania. Sustainable building elements were selected to maximiseenergy efficiency. These include, the installation of insulation, an energyefficient solar hot water system, energy efficient lighting, glazing,heating and a storm water tank to service the landscaped gardens.Numerous challenges and hurdles were revealed throughout theproject and it is the ease and professionalism with which these itemswere rectified by Cunic Constructions that highlights our capability.The efforts of our 35 strong staff were exceptional, particularlythose completed under trying circumstances. For this they arecommended.
