Strategic initiativeSouth african reSearch chairS initiative (Sarchi)Chair in Applied PovertyReduction AssessmentPr<strong>of</strong>essor Julian D Maymayj@ukzn.ac.zaSouth African ResearchChairs Initiative (SARChI)PPr<strong>of</strong>essor Julian May is the NRF-funded South African Research ChairPin Applied Poverty Assessment to which he was appointed in <strong>2009</strong>.PBetween 1994 and 1998, Pr<strong>of</strong>essor May led the Poverty andPInequality P, Report, the first review <strong>of</strong> South Africa’s poverty reductionPpolicies in the post-apartheid era. PHe has worked with South African Government departments in thedevelopment <strong>of</strong> policy and monitoring systems, including social securityand land reform. Inter<strong>na</strong>tio<strong>na</strong>lly, he has worked on an evaluation <strong>of</strong>the World Bank’s social fund programme in Jamaica, Nicaragua,Zambia and Malawi; biodiversity studies in Mozambique and Namibia;poverty reduction strategies in Lesotho, Zambia and Uganda; and onmonitoring and evaluation in Mauritius, Maldives, Namibia, Swazilandand Zimbabwe.Pr<strong>of</strong>essor May was the principal <strong>research</strong>er for the KwaZulu-Na<strong>tal</strong>Income Dy<strong>na</strong>mics Survey (KIDS), a ten-year panel study <strong>of</strong> povertydy<strong>na</strong>mics. With the support <strong>of</strong> funding received from the Economic andSocial Research Council (ESRC) and the European Union, this data isbeing further a<strong>na</strong>lysed in a project being conducted with the LondonSchool <strong>of</strong> Hygiene and Tropical Medicine (LSHTM) and the University<strong>of</strong> Cape Town.Pr<strong>of</strong>essor May is currently working with <strong>research</strong>ers in Senegal,Benin and Tanzania on a project exploring the implications <strong>of</strong> thehuman rights approach for PRSP budgeting as well as with <strong>research</strong>ersin Uganda, Tanzania, Rwanda and Kenya investigating the impact <strong>of</strong>information and communication technologies on poverty.He was a member <strong>of</strong> the South African Statistics Council between1994 and <strong>2008</strong> and is presently the lead consultant for Statistics SouthAfrica working on a new Living Conditions Survey.He is also a member <strong>of</strong> the Steering Committee <strong>of</strong> the South AfricanNatio<strong>na</strong>l Income Dy<strong>na</strong>mics Study; a Research Associate at the BrooksWorld Poverty Institute, University <strong>of</strong> Manchester; the Inter<strong>na</strong>tio<strong>na</strong>lFood Policy Research Institute, Washington; the Department <strong>of</strong>Social Policy, Oxford University; the South African Labour andDevelopment Research Unit, University <strong>of</strong> Cape Town; and a Fellow<strong>of</strong> the Comparative Research Program on Poverty at the University <strong>of</strong>Bergen. During 2002, he was a Visiting Pr<strong>of</strong>essor at the Centre forInter<strong>na</strong>tio<strong>na</strong>l Poverty Studies, University <strong>of</strong> Bergen, and in <strong>2008</strong>/9, avisiting <strong>research</strong>er at LSHTM.He has edited three books, published more than 55 papers inbooks and academic jour<strong>na</strong>ls, and produced more than 120 workingpapers, <strong>research</strong> <strong>repor</strong>ts and other publications.
