AfterPjoining the former University <strong>of</strong> Na<strong>tal</strong>, he received a PhD in BotanyPin 1970. He was promoted to Pr<strong>of</strong>essor <strong>of</strong> Botany and appointed PHead <strong>of</strong> Department in 1987. In 1999 he became Director <strong>of</strong> his ownphysiology, post-harvest physiology, biotechnology and plant tissueculture, ethnobotany, secondary products and ethnomedicine.Pr<strong>of</strong>essor van Staden has supervised 69 MSc students andPEvolutio<strong>na</strong>ry Biology and is a Pr<strong>of</strong>essor in the School <strong>of</strong> Biological andPConservation Sciences on <strong>UKZN</strong>’s Pietermaritzburg campus.PHis PhD on the polli<strong>na</strong>tion <strong>of</strong> plants in the Cape flora was obtained Pfrom the University <strong>of</strong> Cape Town in 1994 and he has since become ainteractions, and has established a state-<strong>of</strong>-the-art laboratory for thestudy <strong>of</strong> chemical cues used by plants to attract insect polli<strong>na</strong>tors.Pr<strong>of</strong>essor Johnson has published more than 160 peer-reviewed scientific78 PhD students. Between 1985 and <strong>2009</strong> he also supervised 48papers, co-authored a book on the Natural History <strong>of</strong> Table Mountai<strong>na</strong>ndpostgraduate <strong>research</strong> centre – the Research Centre for Plant GrowthPostdoctoral Researchers. He is the author/co-author <strong>of</strong> 1 059 papersleading specialist in the field <strong>of</strong> plant polli<strong>na</strong>tion biology.has also written many popular science articles. Pr<strong>of</strong>essorevolutio<strong>na</strong>ry diversification <strong>of</strong> plants, particularly in southern Africa,Plant Interactions, and was guest editor for a special issue <strong>of</strong> the SouthCollege <strong>of</strong> Wales, the University <strong>of</strong> California, the Natio<strong>na</strong>l Australianvan Staden, who is the recipient <strong>of</strong> numerous awards and prizes inthe conservation <strong>of</strong> plant-polli<strong>na</strong>tor mutualisms, and the reproductiveAfrican Jour<strong>na</strong>l <strong>of</strong> Botany in <strong>2009</strong>. He received the NRF President’s AwardUniversity, the Hebrew University <strong>of</strong> Jerusalem, Broom’s Barnhis field, is the Editor-in-Chief for the South African Jour<strong>na</strong>l <strong>of</strong> Botanybiology <strong>of</strong> invasive species.
