Prolific reSearcherS <strong>2008</strong>/<strong>2009</strong>Pr<strong>of</strong>essor Sarp AdaliSchool <strong>of</strong> Mechanical EngineeringAdali@ukzn.ac.zaPPr<strong>of</strong>essor Sarp Adali is a Pr<strong>of</strong>essor <strong>of</strong> solid mechanics at the School <strong>of</strong>PMechanical Engineering which he joined in 1984. He was Head <strong>of</strong> thePSchool between 2000 and 2004 and is currently Director <strong>of</strong> the Centre forPComposite Materials and Structures. Pr<strong>of</strong>essor Adali was an NRF A-ratedP<strong>research</strong>er between 1994 and 1998 and currently enjoys a B1 rating. PHis <strong>research</strong> areas are: composite materials and structures – design,optimisation and a<strong>na</strong>lysis; vibration damping using piezoelectric control;and the mechanics <strong>of</strong> carbon <strong>na</strong>notubes and <strong>na</strong>no-composites.Since 1984 he has supervised or co-supervised 28 MSc studentsand 10 PhD students.Pr<strong>of</strong>essor Adali has authored more than 150 jour<strong>na</strong>l papers andbook chapters, presented more than 120 papers at conferences andhas done a host <strong>of</strong> lectures at overseas <strong>universit</strong>ies. He is a member<strong>of</strong> editorial boards for several respected mechanical engineeringpublications and co-edits others.Pr<strong>of</strong>essor Adali has been a member <strong>of</strong> scientific boards at numerousinter<strong>na</strong>tio<strong>na</strong>l conferences and is a reviewer for a variety <strong>of</strong> respectedindustry publications.Pr<strong>of</strong>essor Chris BallantineSchool <strong>of</strong> MusicBallanti@ukzn.ac.zaProlific Researchers<strong>2008</strong>/<strong>2009</strong>PPthe University <strong>of</strong> KwaZulu-Na<strong>tal</strong>, a Fellow <strong>of</strong> the University, and anPr<strong>of</strong>essor Christopher Ballantine is Pr<strong>of</strong>essor <strong>of</strong> Music Emeritus atPthe University <strong>of</strong> KwaZulu-Na<strong>tal</strong>, a Fellow <strong>of</strong> the University, and anPinter<strong>na</strong>tio<strong>na</strong>lly acclaimed <strong>research</strong>er and writer on music. A graduateP<strong>of</strong> the <strong>universit</strong>ies <strong>of</strong> the Witwatersrand, Cambridge, and Cape Town,Phe occupied the LG Joel Chair <strong>of</strong> Music until the end <strong>of</strong> 2007.Pr<strong>of</strong>essor Ballantine’s <strong>research</strong> explores the meaning <strong>of</strong> music, itssocial implications, and the forces that shape it. His publications tendto be both cross-cultural and interdiscipli<strong>na</strong>ry, and cover a wide range<strong>of</strong> issues in the fields <strong>of</strong> musicology, the sociology <strong>of</strong> music, popularmusic studies, and ethnomusicology.The author <strong>of</strong> three books (Marabi Nights: Early South AfricanJazz and Vaudeville; Music and its Social Meanings; and TwentiethCentury Symphony), Pr<strong>of</strong>essor Ballantine has published extensivelyin a range <strong>of</strong> leading scholarly jour<strong>na</strong>ls (including Popular Music,Ethnomusicology,Jour<strong>na</strong>l <strong>of</strong> Ethnomusicology,African Music, Opera, Musical Quarterly,BritishJour<strong>na</strong>l <strong>of</strong> Southern African Studies,Critical Arts, and Music Review). He has contributed chapters to booksand scholarly encyclopedias (including the New Grove Dictio<strong>na</strong>ry<strong>of</strong> Music & Musicians, the New Grove Dictio<strong>na</strong>ry <strong>of</strong> Jazz, and theContinuum Encyclopedia <strong>of</strong> Popular Music <strong>of</strong> the World), and he serveson numerous inter<strong>na</strong>tio<strong>na</strong>l editorial boards. He was winner <strong>of</strong> the TopResearcher Award from the Centre for Science Development (HumanSciences Research Council) in 1996.Pr<strong>of</strong>essor Ballantine’s current <strong>research</strong> principally concerns therelationships between music on the one hand, and ‘race’, gender andpolitics on the other, in the making <strong>of</strong> identity in post-apartheid SouthAfrica.
