27different elements with a view to understanding how each part might have affectedattitudes and perceptions <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Safe</strong> <strong>Drive</strong>, <strong>Stay</strong> <strong>Alive</strong> event.The DJThe section <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> show featuring <strong>the</strong> local radio DJ was widely appreciated fordelivering a light-hearted, fun element to <strong>the</strong> show. This was particularly pleasing to<strong>the</strong> students who had been anticipating a dry, lecture style <strong>presentation</strong>. Studentsand teachers alike also felt that <strong>the</strong> concept <strong>of</strong> raising students‟ spirits before hitting<strong>the</strong>m with <strong>the</strong> dramatic facts, images and descriptions was an effective way tocommand attention.“The way that <strong>the</strong>y brought on <strong>the</strong> radio man at <strong>the</strong> beginning, it got everyone’sattention.”This said, <strong>the</strong> majority <strong>of</strong> teachers and students felt that <strong>the</strong> DJ section was too longand <strong>the</strong> DJ perhaps went a bit too far in mocking certain students. It was alsodeemed by some to take students on too much <strong>of</strong> a rollercoaster journey <strong>of</strong>emotions.“It was quite shocking because at <strong>the</strong> beginning everyone was really happy and <strong>the</strong>nat <strong>the</strong> end everyone was really upset.”Overall <strong>the</strong> DJ section was felt to be worthwhile for inclusion to help engage studentsbut if <strong>the</strong> SDSA event is to be repeated in future years it is recommended that thissection be reviewed and perhaps shortened and toned down slightly to preventstudents from becoming overly excitable. It would also be recommended to ensure amore gradual transition to <strong>the</strong> next speaker, both in terms <strong>of</strong> lightness <strong>of</strong> tone andlevel <strong>of</strong> dynamism.The Kanye West Music VideoSeveral students remarked that <strong>the</strong>y had not previously been aware that this musicvideo to „Through <strong>the</strong> Wire‟ was based on Kanye West‟s experience <strong>of</strong> a near fatal carcollision. As a popular artist amongst this audience, featuring this music videoduring <strong>the</strong> show helped to make <strong>the</strong> event feel relevant to students <strong>of</strong> this age.However, this part <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> show followed <strong>the</strong> DJ‟s section in which students became
