appendix IV – cleaning and sterilizationDisposable DrillsAll Drills and Screw Taps are disposable and should be usedfor one surgery only. Do not re-sterilize disposable drills.Instruments• Devices must be cleaned and sterilized before intra oraluse in accordance with established procedures in thehospital, clinic or office.Principal Cleaning and Sterilization Procedure• Clean and disinfect instruments and kits in a dishwasher.Alternatively: Disinfect, clean by hand and put in an ultrasoniccleaner.• Dry instruments and put them back in the kit. Place insterilization packets.• Sterilize instrument using a steam autoclave (follow manufacturer’sinstructions).Contra-Angle Cleaning• Contra-angle must be carefully cleaned immediately afteroperation.• Clean first in a washer or under running water. Separatehead from shank, and carefully lubricate both parts.Alternatively, clean and lubricate in an automatic, purposebuiltunit.• Place disassembled contra-angle in double peel-open bag orin tray, and sterilize in autoclave.Modified Abutment and Restoration• If indicated, cleaned and disinfected modified abutmentsand restorations from the dental laboratory according tocommonly accepted procedures for dental laboratory work.Manual Torque Wrench• Clean the parts thoroughly. Allow them to drycompletely. Sterilize in a steam autoclave at 135°C forminimum hold time of 5 minutes or as recommendedin the manufacturer’s instructions.5 min135˚C/276˚F36
