FUTURE FORECAST FOOPPORTOver the past two months I have received numerousphone calls from young electronics students askingwhich area of electronics they should pursue as acareer. They wanted to know which career areas held outthe most hope of getting a job.I decided to spend some time researching this and towrite this article. Please keep in mind while reading thisthat I did not have a crystal ball to look into, but I didspend a lot of time talking to people who are currentlyworking in the industry.Career fields in emerging technologies, like mostthings, have a somewhat predictable life cycle. First, theresearch and prototyping of systems is accomplished. Atthis stage employment is limited to a few highly talentedindividuals. Next, the deployment of the technologyopens up the door for greater employment with schoolsand training companies scrambling to fill the void. Competentpeople who enter the career field at this point tendto have a meteoric rise in their careers. The next stageis maturity as the career field fills, and as the peoplewho got in early gain experience and competence, bothentry opportunities to the field and upward mobility slowsdown. The training companies and schools continue toturn out students for fewer jobs until the field is saturated. Finally, the technology is replaced by newer technologiesand the career field dies.Although this is the pattern that almost all career fieldsfollow, the rate that each stage comes about and theirlongevity varies considerably. There are many variablesthat cause this: The economy, war (or the lack thereof),and competing technologies. In the order of immediate promise, as I see it, they are:• Alternative energy• Mobile Broadband Technology• RESI (Residential Electronics Systems Integration)• RFID (Radio Frequency Identification)However, had I written this article a few months ago,the order would have been different…Although Alternative Energy is in the research stage(in many cases), and for the most part is not yet ableto compete on its own with traditional energy sources, there is a rush to roll it out. This year billions of federaland state dollars as well as private funds are going to bespent to bring this about.Nothing else that I know of is going to have this level offunding. ETA is about to introduce several certificationsin alternative energy aimed not only at the installer andtechnician levels but at the professional integrator levelas well.Job opportunities in this area can be expectedto rise dramatically this year. Thetraining companies and community collegesare going to be hard-pressedto find the students that have thelevel of knowledge in math andscience necessary to be successfulin these careers. Recruitersare also going to have to competewith universities to get thequality of student needed to besuccessful in this area. I predictthat for many schoolsthere is going to be aI came up with four career areas that have varying degreesof promise for employment growth over the nextfive years.12 | The High-Tech News | MAY/JUN2009

R PROMISING CAREERUNITIESby Ray Stroud, CETmaThe alternative energy technologywill be divided into the followingsubcategory areas:• Passive solar• Geothermal• Photovoltaics• Stirling Technology• Wind• Micro Hydro• Fuel cell technology• Alternative Fuelslot of awkward starts trying to get their programs off theground. The second area that would have been at the top of thelist a few months back is Mobile BroadbandTechnology.I believe that Mobile BroadbandTechnology will bring about themost profound change on bothAmerican culture and the waywe do business since the adventof the Internet. It willbe the major contributor toeconomic prosperity for severalyears. Eventually, MobileBroadband Technologywill provide wirelessbroadband capabilityto both fixed and mobile users located in mostplaces that people want to be on the North Americancontinent. Voice, video and data will be available to anyone, anywhere, anytime. Couple GPS coordinates upwith any data base and application that anyone cares tomake available, and you have an infinite number of commercialpossibilities. For the long term, this area will createmore jobs by several factors than alternative energy. But it will have to wait until the end of the current recession/depression,depending on were you live, to have itsexplosive growth that is sure to come.Residential Electronics Systems Integration (or smarthome technology) will march hand-in-hand with MobileBroadband Technology at creating new jobs. The numbersof products that are already being integrated intothe whole-home systems are growing every day. Only theeconomy is holding this back. Even so, there are currentjobs available for the qualified.Lastly, is RFID, and although this technology is fairlywell entrenched, new applications that have recently beendeveloped will produce a sharp upturn in employment.None of these technologies are independent from theothers and we can look forward to further convergenceof technologies. My advice to the students is to apply yourselves to thetask at hand. Do not say to me, “I am not very good atmath or science, I just want a hands-on program”. Youare going to get mighty hungry with this type of attitude. It is called “hard work”, and if math or science is hardfor you, then work hard at mastering them. The opportunitiesand choices are there—now it’s up to you. High Profile in Windby George P. Lister, CETmahave been fortunate in my career as a technician to work with someI pretty cool technologies. This is one of them…Success of a wind farm is all about location, and selecting the rightsite is critical to cost-effective wind generation. Several factors are requiredfor a utility-scale wind project to be sited, but the most importantof these is a good wind resource. Site selection typically begins withwind prospecting, the search for a good general location for a wind facility.Wind data can come from publicly available databases of historicalclimate data. Wind maps provide a rough estimate of the average annualwind at a proposed site. Wind energy developers use wind measurementon or near the prospective site, and computer modeling to use data fromnearby sites such as airports, data collected at the site, and historicalweather information to project wind at the site. This wind informationis called “bankable data” because it is used to help persuade potentialinvestors to give you millions of dollars to help build your wind farm.Although computer models of wind flow have improved in the lastseveral years, there is still no substitute for wind data recorded on-site.The most common method of measuring the wind at a site is to use windsensors mounted on a tower, recorded by a data logger. For best results, the tower should be at least as tall as the hub of a likely wind turbine. This can create a challenge as wind turbines can be 80 meters or aboveat hub height, while the most popular style of meteorological towersused for prospecting are 60 meters in height.Engineers Larry Letteny and Peter Gibson of Second Wind, Inc. recentlygave a technical seminar for the students of the Wind EnergyTechnology program at Texas State Technical College in Sweetwater, TX.The focus of the seminar was the Somerville, MA company’s Triton®sonic wind profiler. Triton® uses sonic detection and ranging (SODAR)to remotely gather data about wind. In water it’s called sound navigationand ranging (SONAR), in air it’s SODAR.Triton works with a hexagonal transducer array and a tri-lobed acousticenclosure to send out 45 kHz acoustic pulses (beeps or shots) and thenlistening for the return signal. Characteristics of the return signal areanalyzed to gain information about wind speed, direction, and turbulence. The unit also has on-board sensors for GPS position, orientation, incline, temperature, and humidity. The Triton system is muchshorter and easier to deploythan a meteorological tower, andgathers data more flexibly andat greater heights. Triton can beconfigured to gather data at manydifferent heights, ranging from30 meters all the way to 200meters. A typical 60 meter mettower can require a crew of threeto five men working three days toerect and commission. One man can unload, position, and start theSecond Wind unit in less than an hour.Let's say you're doing site assessment for a project and the hub heightof your turbines is 80 meters. The blades will sweep an arch that extends120 meters high. An anemometer on a 60-meter tilt-up mast isonly going to be measuring 20% of the swept area. The Triton, beingmuch smaller and easier to install than a met tower, captures data from100% of the turbine swept area.Power consumption for theelectronics is only 7 watts. Solarpanels and battery providepower in even the most remotelocations. We were told that atotal of 50 units have been deployedworldwide and that solararray configuration and batterieswere determined by the requirementsof the location, such asCroatia with 28 days of no sun,to Minnesota with sub-freezingtemperatures.Here’s the really cool part: The success of your site wind profile assessmentoften depends upon getting wind data from remote locations, where cellular service is non-existent. The Second Wind Triton profiler isbundled with SkyServeSM satellite wind data service. SkyServe providesa two-way connection to Triton. With SkyServe, Triton supplies dataevery 10 minutes via the Globalstar satellite network to a secure SecondWind server. Real-time data service gives your computer system immediateaccess to the latest information from virtually anywhere throughyour web browser. In addition to data collection, operational parameterscan be updated remotely. The Second Wind support team provides dailymonitoring of your Triton via SkyServe to ensure proper operation.Beef that with 8GB of SD memory (in case satellite communication isdisrupted), a Linux operating system, ARM and Blackfin processors forcontinuous signal and math processing, Ethernet port, and full on-boarddiagnostics.Wind energy provides an amazing array of technologies. The planningcan be just as challenging as the production. With green technologiesgaining the forefront and energy independence becoming a hot-buttonissue, rapid advances in wind energy will continue to fuel the rush ofnew technologies to keep a guy like me happy for quite some time.A typical Triton wind speed trend displaying wind speed from 30 to 200meters altitude can show evidence of wind shear. Wind shear is a differencein wind speed and direction over a relatively short distance inthe atmosphere. Wind shear is a concern to wind turbine manufacturersbecause it can produce radically varying loads on turbine blades, hubs, mainshafts, gearboxes, as well as towers and nacelles. Ongoing windshear research supports manufacturers’ efforts to improve quality andperformance. y William C. Sutton, CETThere really isn’t any limit to what your students can do if theyare challenged and guided properly to accomplish a project given areal world situation. A great scholar and teacher, Jaime Escalante, once said; “If you expect your students to fail, they will fail. If youchallenge them to succeed they will amaze you.” So the challengethat was presented to the ITT Technical Institute, Albuquerque, and School of Electronic Technology was to assemble a team ofstudents for a real world application project, to build and test atelemetry package to be launched into space. The opportunity forthis adventure came from the New Mexico Space Grant, a programadministered by the New Mexico State University engineeringdepartment and sponsored by UP Aerospace and NASA. Thepurpose of the program is designed to develop New Mexico’sfuture work force by providing students annual access to spaceand technology development from Spaceport America located insouthern New Mexico.Within the program there were three levels of participation thatare classified by school levels, Level 1: Universities; New MexicoState and University of New Mexico, level 2: Community Colleges;Doña Ana Community College, ITT Technical Institute, andSouthwestern Indian Polytechnic Institute, level 3: High Schools;Cloudcroft H.S., Hatch Valley H.S., Hot Springs H.S. (Truth orConsequences), Mayfield H.S. (Las Cruces) and Las Cruces H.S.The packages assembled and tested at each level were preselectedcomponents which varied in complexity and degreeof technology. The package for ITT consisted of pre-selectedcomponents that were of specific design and concise specificationsfor a payload called “Rock On!” consisting of components such as;components of both through hole and surface mount technology,ESD sensitive components and PC boards, such componentsand assemblies as a 68HC11D microprocessor/controller,altitude sensors, azimuth sensors, flash memory modules withUSB interface circuits and a Geiger – Müller radiation detectionmodule. This technology presented an ideal learning situation forour students and our team took full advantage of it to learn. Thelearning curve was very sharp but a good challenge. The projectwas completed and turned over to UP Aerospace for final testingand acceptance for launch on 27 February 2009 and passed withno deficiencies. The launch date is 2 May 2009 from SpaceportAmerica. The team from ITTconsisted of twelvemembers representingboth the Bachelor ofScience ElectronicC o m m u n i c a t i o n sEngineering Technology(BSECET) and TheAssociate of AppliedScience Computers andITT Technical Institute Albuquerque’s Education Space LaunchDesign and Assembly Team, Back row left to right: Chris Bruckner,William Al-Saiegh, Delvin Begay, Terry Bussey, Cody Felipe, LuizArmendariz, Front row left to right: Marc Maximovich, KennethHarder, Dan Yarber, Amber Turner and Jeremiah PattersonElectronics Engineering Technology(AASCEET) degree programsand were selected by the School Chair and Faculty for perfectattendance and academic excellence, their names are: MarcMaximovich BSECET (Project Leader), Ken Harder AASCEET(Team Leader), Dan Yarber AASCEET (Team Leader), William AlSaiegh BSECET, Elton Barney BSECET, Chris Lopez AASCEET,Amber Turner BSCEET, Luiz Armendariz AASCEET, ChrisBruckner BSECET, Delvin Begay AASCEET, Cody Felipe BSECET,and Terry Bussey BSECET. The project was divided into twoassembly teams: Geiger and Data/Communications modules. Bothteams functioned as one design and development team under theguidance and tutelage of the School of Electronics Technologyfaculty. The faculty served as advisors only and did not participatein the assembly and test of the package. The project proved tobe a major success for the ITT team. Additionally, the ITT teamwas called upon to assist the other two community college teamsthat were experiencing technical difficulties with final assemblytesting. HTNWilliam C. TheCertificationAdvantageby Scott Bachrach, RESIIn a 2007 survey, the Institute of Management Accountantsreported certified accountants and financial managers earn27% higher salaries than their non-certified counterparts. Astudy by the American Association of Professional Coders thesame year found a 17% pay superiority for certified medicalcoders. Several other recent surveys have gone on to establishthe unequivocal salary edge that certified professionals wield.Nowhere perhaps is the difference more apparent than in thefield of electronics and computer professionals.According to the AmericanSociety for Quality, a certified softwareengineer annually earns over $14,000more than a non-certified peer withequivalent academic credentials.Findings of this nature usually provokea standard question: which is better,a degree or certification? An academic degree, by definition, attempts to develop anintellectual understanding about a particular subject. Certification,on the other hand, is aimed at equipping someone withthe practical skills necessary for a specific job. While there isof course a question of personal choice and ambition here, thepractical advantages of certification, especially in challengingand rapidly evolving industries like software and IT, are undeniable. The reason behind this is that technical skills command bettersalaries – a basic principle of market economies. Employersare motivated to increase employee salaries for those who demonstrateimproved expertise because they otherwise stand to loseskilled manpower to rival, better-paying companies. As long asthere is tangible value-addition to an individual’s skill set andworkplace efficiency, certification brings decided advantages tocareer prospects. The larger payoff that comes with certification goes muchbeyond an immediate pay hike; the long-term benefits oftentranslate to added professional confidence and enhanced productivity.Certification courses involve hands-on training andproblem-solving exposure that academic disciplines usually donot provide. This is not to suggest that any certification wouldautomatically translate to “rosier” prospects professionally, but"Employers are motivated to increaseemployee salaries for thosewho demonstrate improved expertisebecause they otherwise standto lose skilled manpower to rival,better-paying companies."those who are trying to get out of the career rut by bettering theirskills or learning a new one have no better option.Certifications are essentially a means of independently verifyingproficiency in a specific area. They are meant to aid professionalsacquire the right skill sets concerning a specific area of operation. It holds special significance in the field of computers andIT where core competence areas are divergent and often largelyunrelated. For instance, A database administrator and a networkadministrator both work in the same department but their skillswould be vastly different.Often the undisputable and easiestway to carve out a niche professionalexpertise is certification, although itdoesn’t always guarantee immediatereturns. The obvious fact is that itwould be completely useless if certificationis not accompanied by a visibledifference in performance and productivity, which happens when such courses are approached in amanner of theoretical and academic study. Certifications allowthe skills to be readily apparent and immediately utilizable. Itis only reasonable for employers hiring certified professionals toexpect higher efficiency and output.Young professionals should take note that every certificationprogram is not equally valuable. It requires a clear line of reasoningto establish what course gives you the maximum mileagewhile being most consistent with your overall career. If there is aquestion of aptitude here, there is an equal consideration of demand.Certification courses, especially those relating to softwareand IT, often move up and down preference levels according toindustry dynamics. Hence there is a question of relevance thathas to be addressed before choosing one.Yet there are times when certification will not immediatelyproduce results or lead to a raise. Maybe there is a job switchwaiting to happen before the right benefits start rolling in. Thekey is to appreciate the fact that certifications still add substantiallyto an employee’s professional wisdom and qualification. From an employer’s point of view, they provide an easy and scientificway of gauging professional competences. The bottom line is that certifications really pay, even if insome cases they do not immediately, but in the long run. ETA ®International5 Depot StreetGreencastle IN 46135(800) 288-3824www.etainternational.orgeta@eta-i.orgPresorted StandardUS Postage PaidTucson, AZPermit #271Address Service RequestedTO:This is a good electronics science experiment for elementarychildren on up that explains a basics of electronics.1. Acquire one post-it pad, one number 1 pencil (thick-lead. # 2 will work, though), battery and a ohm meter.2. With your attentive crowd in place, have one individual take the #1 pencil and a post-it pad. Have the selected individualthen draw a rectangle, square, or circle on the first sheet of post-it paper.3. Once the image is darkened in with a sufficient layer of lead, then it is time for the ohm meter.4. It is at this time I explained resistance through the illustration of water and a garden hose. I paralleled the hose to a copperconductor, and the small voltage the ohm meter sends through one probe to be measure by the other, to the water.6. Taking the leads, your individual will now place both apart from one another on one of the drawn geometric designs.7. Moving the probes closer and then further apart, it is easy to see the meter indication change. It is here you can explainmagnitudes of resistance; ohm, kilo-ohm, meg-ohm, etc.8. The resistance and meter change is once explained in terms as hose and water in regards to conductor and voltage.9. This simple little project was followed up, in the afternoon, by creating capacitors with cardboard, tinfoil, wire conductors, waxpaper (dielectric) and a battery.by Richard Booth, FOT24 | The High-Tech News | MAY/JUN2009
