NOV/DEC09LETTER from thePRESIDENTDear Readers:We just finished up an excellent ETA Educators Forum here in Greencastle, IN. If you were a part of it we appreciate yourinvolvement and commitment to technology training and certification for today’s technicians. As a part of the ETA Annual Membership Meeting, a year in review report is always submitted, and I’d like to share some ofthat report with you now.The beginning of our ETA year started out just as almost every other organizations’ year began, with belt tightening, cost cutting and expense reduction taking the forefront as the economy continued to falter. Based on the strength of ourorganization we were fortunate to not have to resort to staff reduction or decreases in staff hours. We were able to hold steadythroughout the year and even see increases in many key certification areas. Our initial plan with regard to cutbacks, included decreasing the number of marketing events we would attend, but as we began to see an increase in income,we were actually able to participate in additional events, while cutting costs on those events that we traditionally attended. There were other opportunities forour very active officers to attend regional events on behalf of ETA, including the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas and a US Veterans Affairs event in theSouthwest. ETA also attended the US Department of Defense Worldwide Education Symposium held every three years, this year in Atlanta, GA, ACTE in NC,American Technical Educators Association in Chattanooga, TN, Fiber to the Home in Houston, TX, Solar Power International, Anaheim, CA, Enterprise WirelessAlliance, Atlanta, GA, and several others.Of course our commitment to SkillsUSA continued as we again sponsored the National contest for Telecommunications Cabling. We saw an increase in thenumber of students competing and added a new committee member, our newly elected chairman, Scott Bachrach, CETma. We also added Raytheon as a newsponsor for our contest this year.We were happy to add the North Carolina State Department of Public Instruction of to our list of partners. In a state with a great deal of electronics andtechnology, the high schools in North Carolina are working to cover the EM5 competencies in their electronics training. The FCC released new test pools for Elements 1, 3, and 8 which will become the exclusive pools after December 26, 2009 and those are now being utilizedby techs testing with ETA who can choose either the new or old pools for several more weeks. The Associate CET Study Guide is going through big changes. In 2010, we should have completed most of the new study guide series. The study guide willnow be divided into five different books that will specifically cover AC, DC, Digital, Analog and Comprehensive as the EM5 certification program does.ETA jumped into the social media networks with an ETA Facebook page and LinkedIn. Join us there as we add stories, news releases and information that ispertinent to our techs right now. Also look for ETA information on the Military COOL sites for both the Navy https://www.cool.navy.mil/ and Army https://www.cool.army.mil/.The Alternative Energy certification was a main focus for ETA this year with the result being the release of Installer level certifications in both Photovoltaicsand Small Wind Turbine. Subsequent releases are scheduled in the near future for entry level certification, in Geothermal, Micro Hydro and Fuel Cell technologyas well as more advanced certifications at the integrator level. We were happy to work this year with the National Technical Honor Society and hope to increase our involvement with this worthwhile organization.New certifications released in 2009 with Motorola included product specific material in Wireless Broadband, GTR Consoles and Signal Invesitgation Techniques.ETA also attended the Enterprise Wireless Alliance in Atlanta, GA this month in support of the Certified Service Center effort that is adding service organizationswho can demonstrate their ‘best business’ practices in attaining this acknowledgement. One of the benefits being that a CSC desgination lets’ their customersknow they will be treated exceptionally by trained and certified staff, managers and customer service personel. The upcoming year is fast approaching with our planned involvement on several grant efforts, photonics and one or more additional fiber optics certifications. These will be in addition to the newly updated Fiber Optics Installer and Fiber Optics Technician-Outside Plant certifications which make up the foundation ofthe hugely successful ETA Fiber Optics program. Thanks to the Certification Administrators who are the face of ETA, to the techs sitting for ETA certification, to the technicians that our organization wasfounded to represent, and to the dedicated officers and staff who spend countless volunteer hours representing ETA and who in fact, ARE ETA International!Keep calling, writing, emailing, and facebooking your thoughts, interests and new discoveries-We will continue to share them with your fellow techs who continueto keep our technology world connected and functioning!!Thanks for 2009; let’s get ready for 2010 with our running shoes on and our certifications in hand.Sincerely,ETA ®InternationalThe High-Tech NewsVOLUME 33 • SECTION 6ETA ®STAFFCEO EmeritusPresidentNew Media Director/EditorMarketing/Membership CoordinatorFinancial DirectorDirector of CET AdministrationCET Division DirectorAssoc. Understanding Op-Ampby Andre Smalling, CETKarl Eilers, CATCircuitry – Part 1The Operational Amplifier, or Op-Amp, is a very widely used integratedcircuit. Aside from the convenience of having a large gain in a smallpackage, the configuration allows a circuit designer to define its behaviorby choosing a few external components. Compared to the methodsengineers had to use in the tube and discrete-transistor days, op-amps havegreatly simplified circuit design.Technicians may never design op-amp circuits, but they should understandhow they work, so as to be able to look at a diagram and tell whether a particularcircuit is behaving the way the diagram says it should.Op-amps are used for linear amplifiers, voltage and current converters, comparators, rectifiers, oscillators, instrumentation amplifiers, and active filtersamong other things. They could be regarded as the universal active linearcomponent. The op-amp (Figure 1) is basically anamplifier with a differential pair of inputsand, almost always, a single output. This is the modern version of the “differentialamplifier” invented in 1934 byDr. Otto Schmitt, who also invented theSchmitt Trigger. “Differential” meansthat the op-amp measures the voltage difference between the inputs. Oneof the inputs is an “inverting” or (-) input; if you put a positive voltage on it,the output will go negative. The other is a “non-inverting” or (+) input; if youput a positive voltage on it, the output will go positive. Remember, when wetalk about an input voltage, we mean the voltage relative to the other input. An ideal op-amp would have the following characteristics:• Infinite voltage gain• Infinite speed• Infinite input impedance• Zero output impedance• Zero offset voltage• Zero noise voltage• Zero noise currentNo op-amp achieves these goals, but some of them come impressively close. One of the nice things about circuit integration is that the manufacturer canput in as many “parts” as needed, at virtually zero extra cost per part, so theonly performance-limiting factor is the fundamental molecular limits of thematerials. This permits op-amps to do impressive things which are next toimpossible with discrete components. An op-amp needs a DC power supply, which we have shown only in figure 1.The output of an op-amp cannot go more positive than the positive powersupply voltage nor more negative than the negative power supply voltage. In many cases, the negative supply is ground, but we are going to assumethat our power supply is bipolar, as in figure 1, meaning that it supplies bothpositive and negative voltages with respect to ground. This will permit ourop-amp circuits to swing either way from ground.Voltage GainAt DC and low frequencies, an op-amp’s output voltage is:Eq.1 Vo = (V+in – V-in) x GoWhereV+in = voltage at (+) inputV-in = voltage at (-) inputVo = voltage at outputGo = open-loop gain of the particular op-amp“Open loop” means the basic gain of the op-amp with no feedback loop connectedaround it. Op-amps are seldom used this way.The whole idea behind the op-amp is that it will be used with a “feedbackloop” made of resistors and other components – and that the feedback loop, not the op-amp, will determine the circuit gain. This permits the circuit designerto make the op-amp do anything he/she wants, within limits, just byselecting a few external components. For this to work, the gain of the op-amp must be much greater than therequired circuit gain, so that it does not constitute a limiting factor. That iswhy, in a circuit with a voltage gain of 100, an op-amp with a gain of 100,000might be used. This is an important thing to remember – the gain of theop-amp is not the same as the gain of the finished circuit it will be used in.The Non-Inverting Amplifier CircuitWe can understand the op-amp’s functionby looking at Figure 2. Note that, in thiscircuit, the input voltage is connected tothe (+) input, while the (-) input is connectedto the output. In this circuit, the outputvoltage is “fed back” to the (-) input; that’sthe loop we mentioned. In practical circuits, an additional resistor (not shown)is usually connected between the (+) and some other point, to set the startingvoltage at the (+) input.Suppose that the (+) input is initially at zero volts. Suppose too that theoutput is at zero volts, which means the (-) input will also be at zero volts, since it’s connected to the output. Now suppose you raise the (+) input to 2 volts. This creates a differential voltagebetween the inputs. The voltage on the (+) is higher than the voltage on the (-)input, so the output starts going positive. Without the feedback loop, the outputwould almost instantly hit the positive supply voltage limit and stay there. However, because of the feedback loop, when the output voltage goes positive, the (-) voltage also goes positive. Within microseconds, the outputvoltage, and thus the voltage on the (-) input, reaches 2 volts. At that point, there is no longer a voltage difference across the inputs, and the output voltagedoes not go higher.Simply put, the op-amp creates whatever output voltage is required to drivethe difference across the inputs to zero. The feedback loop acts like a car’scruise control, constantly monitoring the speed and making corrections. Anothername for feedback loop is “servo loop,” which will be familiar to readerswho work with numeric control and robotics.4 | The High-Tech News | NOV/DEC2009

In the circuit of Figure 2, feedback causes the op-amp to output the samevoltage as the (+) input. The output follows the input, which is why thiscircuit is called a “voltage follower.” (Another Otto Schmitt invention.) Thevoltage gain of a voltage follower is 1; that is, unity.(We’re hedging a bit. There must be a small input voltage differential tokeep the output at 2V instead of zero. Suppose our op-amp has a gain of100,000 which means we need a 20 microvolt input differential to get a 2Voutput. If the (+) input is 2V, the (-) input must be 20 microvolts less, or1.99998 volts. That means the output will actually be 1.99998 volts; inother words, the output doesn’t quite catch up to the input. This is a .001%error, which for most purposes is so insignificant that it is customary toignore it, and think of the voltage across the inputs as being precisely zero.)What good is an amplifier that doesn’t amplify? It does amplify – current. The input impedance of an op-amp is very high (essentially infinite, if it usesFET transistors), thus it loads the input signal very slightly or not at all. Onthe other hand, it has a very low output impedance, which is further reducedby the operation of the feedback loop to almost zero. A low-impedance,“stiff” output is good for driving a heavy load, or sending a signal through anelectrically noisy environment. Thus a voltage follower can convert a fragilesignal into a sturdy one.Now let’s look at Figure 3. Here again, the output is fed back to the (-) input, but this time, because of the 3:1 voltagedivider, the output has to changeby 3 volts to make the (-) input changeby 1 volt. If you put 1V on the (+) input, the output will rise to 3V. Thisputs 2V across the 2K resistor and 1Vacross the 1K resistor, making the voltageon the (-) input equal to the voltage on the (+) input. 1V in, 3V out: thecircuit has a voltage gain of 3.By changing the resistor ratio, we can get any gain up to the limit of theop-amp’s own gain. Here’s the gain equation for a non-inverting amplifier:Eq. 2 Gv = 1 + R2/R1Where Gv is the circuit voltage gain and R1 & R2 form the feedback loop. Inplain English, the gain is one more than the ratio of R2 to R1.The lowest possible gain is when R2 = zero, as in the voltage follower, orwhen R1 = infinity. In these cases, the equation collapses to Gv = 1, orunity. A non-inverting amp can never have a gain less than one.As its name implies, the non-inverting amplifier does not invert the polarityof the signal, which is to say that the output is in phase with the input, asimplied by the “+” signs at the input and output. With or without voltagegain, it has a very high input impedance. The Inverting Amplifier CircuitThe inverting amplifier, Figure 4, reversesthe signal polarity, so a positivegoinginput signal results in a negativegoingoutput; that is, the output is 180degrees out of phase with the input.Note the “-“ sign at the output. (If youwant to be nitpicky, “phase” in thiscontext is incorrect, we should be speaking about polarity.) Note that we’veflipped the amplifier symbol over; the inverting input is on top. An op-ampmay be drawn either way.If a positive voltage is applied to the circuit input, the voltage at the (-) inputwill start to go positive. Since this is the inverting input, that will start todrive the output negative. When the output gets far enough negative for thecurrent flowing into the junction between the resistors to equal the currentflowing out of it, the voltage at the junction, and the (-) input, will be zero. This should be no surprise. Remember that we said the op-amp and feedbackloop drives the input difference voltage to zero. Since the (+) input isgrounded, and at zero voltage, the op-amp will act to keep the (-) at zero volts. In this circuit, the gain is simply the ratio of the two resistors:Eq. 3 Gv = – R2/R1Note the minus sign; it’s there because the output signal is inverted. Notealso that, if R2 is smaller than R1, the gain can be less than unity. This isuseful where a very large signal must be reduced but a simple attenuatorwon’t work for one reason or another.(Which brings up a cautionary note: many op-amps are not stable when thecircuit gain is low. The manufacturer’s specifications will tell you.)Though the input impedance of an op-amp is very high, the input impedanceof the inverting circuit is not. Since the feedback loop always acts to keepthe (-) input at zero volts, it can be considered a “virtual ground.” R1 is connectedbetween the signal input and this virtual ground, so the entire inputsignal voltage appears across R1. Thus Zin = R1. This means the invertingcircuit is not a good choice when you need a very high input impedance. On the other hand, the inverting amp allowsus to combine a number of signalswithout each one affecting or contaminatingthe others. The signal voltage atthe (-) input is zero – it’s a virtual ground, remember – so we can feed a number ofsignals through separate resistors to thatcombining point (Figure 5) and they willnot backfeed each other. Individual signals can be connected or disconnectedwithout affecting the level of other signals. This circuit is widely usedin, for example, audio mixing consoles.Again, this is an inverting circuit – note the “-“ sign at the output.Differential Amplifier CircuitsAll the circuits shown thus far have a single input. However, the two inputsof the op-amp permit us to make circuits with differential inputs as well.Figure 6 shows the most basic type. Ifall four resistors are equal, and if theop-amp gain and input impedance areinfinite, a differential signal at the inputswill produce an equal voltage atthe output – that is, the circuit will haveunity gain – but a common-mode inputsignal, where the voltage is the same onboth inputs, will produce zero voltage atthe output. The circuit can have a gain other than unity. R1 must always equal R2, andR3 must always equal R4. If we define the input signal as the differencevoltage across the input terminals, the voltage gain is equal to R1 / R3.Readers familiar with signal transmission over cables will recognize that adifferential input is a “balanced” input, and balanced circuits are usefulwhere we want to send a weak signal through a noisy environment. A signalwhich has been degraded by interference is a combination of desired signaland undesired noise. In a balanced circuit, the desired signal is differentialand the undesired noise is common-mode (because outside interference affectsboth sides of the circuit about equally). Running such a signal throughthe circuit of Figure 6 will keep the signal and get rid of the noise. In practice, the noise rejection is never perfect. If the resistors are not carefullymatched, noise may only be attenuated by 30dB. Still, 30dB is a lot.It can be the difference between a usable signal and an unusable one. Anaudio power amp with a balanced input is likely to use this circuit. This is not the best differential circuit. In the next op-amp article, we’ll lookat an improved three-op-amp circuit called the “instrumentation amplifier,”which is widely used in medical and laboratory applications. We’ll also lookat other op-amp uses.If you want to experiment, the old standby 741 is simple, stable, and cheap. It’s not for high frequencies (above the audio band) or high current output(self-limited to 25MA) but it’s probably the best all-around experimenter’sop-amp. You can find the LM741CN at Radio Shack stores, stock number276-007. Connection diagrams and detailed specifications are availableonline. HTNNOV/DEC2009 | etainternational.org | 5

y John Baldwin, CETsrBy now most electronics students are well underway in their fallterm. Some of the topics get a bit overwhelming, but like Dick Glasshas told folks over the years “Keep Plugging”. Persistence is one ofthose traits that separate the outstanding tech from the average crowd. In the last issue of the HTN, we discussed efficiency and energyconsumption. Many new products are increasing their energy efficiencyratings as compared to old devices. Electronic devices can be classifiedas either creating an output or requiring an input. Output devicesproduce light, sound, heat or motion. Input devices can be things suchas switches, sensors, microphones and cameras. It is predicted that LEDs will totally replace incandescent lightbulbs in a few years. New home improvement lighting products canbe expected to decrease in price over time as development costs areabsorbed by increases in production quantity.I encourage students to think about creating a new light bulb. Aperson could easily reap a million dollars in profit in developing a newlight source. Thomas Edison became famous for his incandescent lampover 100 years ago. Efficiencies have improved in recent developments, compared to the standard incandescence bulb, which typically produce17 lumens per watt, where as compact fluorescents give off 60 lumensper watt, and LEDs can light up our lives with well over 100 lumensper watt. The lumen (lm) is the unit of luminous flux measured over aspherical area, measured at wavelengths where human eyes are mostsensitive. As science progressed, the term candle power or the unit of footcandlehas been replaced with the term “candela”. A simple candleemits light in all directions with a luminous intensity of about onecandela. The candela is defined as the luminous intensity, in a certaindirection, of a light source that emits monochromatic radiation at afrequency of 540 × 10 12 Hz and that has an intensity of 1⁄683 watt persteradian. That frequency corresponds to the maximum sensitivity areaof the light spectrum for human eyes, also referred to as photopic vision. The intensity is the output measured at a specific point away from thelight source. In similarity to RF antennas used in wireless devices, the basic lightradiator is isotropic, meaning that it radiates in all directions. When alight source has focused energy like a directional antenna, then lightbeams become concentrated and luminous flux density increases ascompared to a spherical isotropic radiator. LEDs tend to be directionalwhere as older incandescent bulbs are more uniform in all directionswhen it comes to spreading light around. A Fiber Optic cable is one wayto direct and channel light to a specific point.ETA has many fiber optics certifications and wonderful trainingsessions on fiber splicing and bonding. Two basic types of fiber aresingle mode and multimode. Telecommunications uses fiber for long haulbroadband gigabyte digital pipes, called Optical Carriers, referenced toOC1 to OC192 capacities. Extremely fast pulses of light carry video andsound up to 50 miles without need for a repeater.Sound output devices are typically electromagnetic or electrostaticin nature. Years ago, there was research on plasma flame speakers asa unique way of producing sound using heated air. Most work today isstrictly packaging the speaker drivers and how to produce clean sound.ETA is proud to announce a new Commercial Audio Technician (CAT)certification exam. It covers all of the important audio terminology, connectors, installation and measurements.Sound pressure or loudness is measured in decibels (dB), wherethat pressure is equal to the force divided by the area covered. Inthe International System of Units, (SI) the unit of sound pressure ismeasured in pascals (Pa). A discussion of the seven physical base unitsand essential basic electronic units can be found at: http://physics.nist.gov/cuu/Units/units.htmlSound Pressure Level, or SPL is the logarithmic unit measured indB that defines how loud sound is compared to a standard referencelevel. The reference level is usually the threshold of human hearing,or about as loud as a mosquito flying 10 feet away from your ears.Speakers and other audio products have specifications in SPL units tocompare apples to apples. Since human hearing is frequency sensitiveover a range of frequencies, approximately 15-15000 Hz, and all peopledo not hear the same frequencies equally, a system of sound weightinghas been developed to compensate how loud various sounds are heard. The dB is also an important measurement unit for RF, Wireless andTelecommunications fields of study. There are basically two types of dB:relative and absolute. Relative dB is specified to compare the differenceof two signals, and is specified by just using the dB label by itself. Forexample, 20 dB could be used for comparing the gain of an amplifier, the difference between the input and the output signal levels, measuredin either volts or watts of power. Absolute dB, on the other hand, isreferenced to a standard level, such as 1 mW (milliWatt). A suffix isadded on to the basic unit of dB to describe the standard reference,For example, dBm is used to indicate “as referenced to1 mW of power.”Different types of dB used in electronics systems are listed in the 2008ETA Associate study guide on pages 95 and 96. ETA is on the road again....Fiber to the HomeConference & Expo in Houston, TexasETA was proud to be apart of this year's biggest fiber to the home (FTTH) industry event. More than 1,700 industry leaders andprofessionals from the telecommunications industry participated.Attendance numbers are reported to matched those of previous years, showing that the economy has not effected the growing interestin upgrading copper-based networks to 100 percent fiber access. More than 50 track sessions, panel discussions and workshops tookplace during the four-day conference, attendees learned about how all-fiber networks are changing the telecommunications landscapeby delivering faster Internet connections and higher quality video services, and enabling service providers to "future-proof" theirnetworks in light of the ever-expanding bandwidth requirements of their customers.During the conference, the FTTH Council announced that all-fiber networks now reach 5.33 million homes in North America, with1.5 million households connected in each of the last two years. Fiber to the home networks now pass 15 percent of the homes on thecontinent.Conference keynote speaker Richard Lynch, CTO of Verizon, rallied the attendees with a look back on the "naysayers" who initiallydismissed his Verizon's bold investment in an FTTH strategy, and who he says now call the company asking for FiOS installation intheir homes. The Deputy Administrator of the Rural Utilities Service in the U.S. Department of Agriculture, Jessica Zufolo, provided anupdate on the broadband stimulus programs under the recovery legislation, while the conference also included numerous presentationsand discussions on the progress of stimulus applications by FTTH companies.More than 130 exhibitors from the industry exhibited and demonstrated their equipment, products and services. The Expo Hallincluded demonstrations of fiber-powered HD and HD-3D television service, as well as a demonstration of a telemedicine applicationsponsored by MedConcierge and St. Joseph Medical Center in Houston. In addition, Phillip Robinson, CEO of St. Joseph, addressedthe conference and spoke about the latest developments in its tele-health services to local communities and corporations.ETA met with industry leaders representing a range of FTTH products and services, including such companies as Corning CableSystems and the Light Brigade. Also we were very pleased to meet with several ETA certified professionals and a few CA's too.Overall the conference was a success for ETA and we are proud to attend in the future.Scott Bachrach, CETmaNEW CSC’sUPCOMINGEVENTSCERTIFIEDSERVICECENTERThe mission of theCertified ServiceCenter programis to encourageprofessionalismwithin the serviceindustry and topublicly identify thoseservice facilities that striveto provide honest, competent and professionalservice.
