B. Engineers serving on committees (inclusive of those serving on safetycommittees as representatives of the Brotherhood of Locomotive Engineers)will, upon sufficient notice, be granted time off without pay, consistent with theneeds of service, to perform committee work. Engineers off as outlined hereinwill not be subject to the provisions of Article 11 Paragraph E. 1.ARTICLE 31 - ATTENDING COURT AND INQUESTSEngineers who are required to attend court or inquests on behalf of the Company shall bemade whole for lost wages, or be paid for actual time in attendance.ARTICLE 32 - LEAVE OF ABSENCESection 1GeneralA. Engineers shall not be expected to work when sick, but in case of beingcompelled to lay off on account of sickness of themselves, or family, should insome manner notify the proper authority of their inability to protect the servicerequirements of the Company.B. When an Engineer on a regularly assigned run lays off for any cause, he mustbe available for duty at least three hours before the bulletined spread time orstarting time of the assignment.C. The General Chairman will be furnished a copy of each leave of absencegranted to Engineers.D. Engineers may return to work prior to the expiration of a leave of absence whenthere is no other prohibition.E. Engineers who do not return to service at the expiration, of their leave ofabsence, and who have not submitted application for an extension thereof, willbe notified that they are absent without permission and such notice willinstruct them to return to service or to satisfactorily account for their absencewithin 15 days or forfeit seniority as Engineer. Engineers who forfeit theirseniority as a result of the provisions outlined herein with have theiremployment relationship with the Company terminated. A copy of the notice tothe absent Engineer will be furnished to the Local Chairman and GeneralChairman of the Brotherhood of Locomotive Engineers on the territoryconcerned. It is understood that this Agreement does not prejudice theprovisions of schedule agreements relating to protests against changes inseniority rosters.Section 2Less Than 1 YearEngineers may, upon written application to their employing officer, be granted leave ofabsence for a period or periods not to exceed one year.
