268Industrial IT cablingUniform IT platforms are increasingly used to connect different worldsThe worlds of office and industrial cabling are growing evercloser. The need for sales departments to receive currentproduction data or to engage in short-term planningof production processes requires a uniform group-wideIT platform.Manufacturers of automation and control equipment demandconsistent, future-proofed international standards, while usersare looking for secure investments. Ever more applications inproduction processes are implemented via Ethernet, reducingmaintenance and operating costs. Existing standards andapplications, such as PROFINET, will still need support in theyears to come. This results in a requirement for a clear separation between"application" and "network", which can only be achievedusing a uniform IT platform as a base, combined with genericcommunication cabling, in both the office and manufacturingenvironments. This requirement has been standardised in theEN 50173-1, -2, -3 series, and in the ISO/IEC11801 and ISO/IEC24702 international standards.A consistent extension of the use of genericcabling offers enormous advantages, including:Reduction in the assortment of productsDeployment and distribution of mass-produced productsStandardisation of acceptance measurementsReduction in training costsEasy trouble-shootingSimplification of the network operation, maintenance anddocumentation■■■■■■■■■■■■It is frequently observed these days that the transmissionrequirements in industrial environments are less challengingthan those in the office area. This can lead to a reduction incosts without risking the future requirements of the network.Since cable laying is expensive, and an expansion of technicalrequirements would lead to unnecessary additional costs,we recommend that data cables should be selected to meetthe highest standards (Category 7 or above). The connectivity can certainly be limited to the level currentlyrequired, if the equipment used can be adapted cleverly to meetchanging requirements in both transmission rates and buildingor manufacturing construction. This balancing act is easily manageable using theVarioKeystone® connection system from LEONI.www.leoni-infrastructure-datacom.com
