The aim of this secondphase is to explore recruitment and retention issues in relation to midwiferyacademics and those in diagnostic radiography.Who is involved in the study?The study is being led by Dr Elizabeth Rosser and Dr John Albarran, both whoare Readers at the University of the West of England. The project has beenapproved by the Faculty of Health and Life Sciences Ethics committee, Universityof the West of England, Bristol.Why have I been approached?As a lead academic of one of these two disciplines and employed by a HigherEducation institute in the South West, we would very much like to hear yourviews about any problems associated with the ongoing recruitment and retentionof staff. Before you decide, it is important for you to understand what the study isabout and what it will involve. Please take time to read the following informationcarefully and discus it with others if you wish.What is involved?Participation in this study involves agreeing to be interviewed at a placeconvenient to you by a member of the research team. The interview will beaudio-taped and last between 45-60 minutes. It may be possible to undertake a43
telephone interview. Once the tapes have been transcribed you will be sent acopy to confirm the accuracy of the text.Do I have to take part?Your decision to participate is entirely voluntary. If you agree to take part you willbe invited to give written consent prior to the interviews. If you decide to takepart you are still free to withdraw at any time and without giving a reason.How will the anonymity of the participants and the confidentiality of thedata be safeguarded?All data collected will remain confidential and used solely for the study. Toassure your anonymity, researchers will remove, omit or change any identifiablematerial from interview data. Additionally, although lead academics will be knownto the researchers, we will ensure you are not linked with a particularorganisation to prevent you being identified. All electronic files, paper basedmaterials and tape recordings will be destroyed once the research findings havebeen disseminated.Only the research team will have access to the interview tapes and transcripts,which will be kept anonymous and in a locked cabinet. Your identity will not berevealed in any report or publication as a result of the study. Questionnaires,tapes and transcripts will be destroyed after a maximum of 3 years to allow thefinal report and papers to be written.What will happen to the results of the study?A report of the evaluation will be presented to HERDA SW and to the StrategicHealth Authority, South West. It is anticipated that an executive summary of theproject will be circulated to all who participated.
