Nerveimpulses through these connect<strong>in</strong>g neurons can result <strong>in</strong> localchanges <strong>in</strong> the potential <strong>in</strong> the cell body of the receiv<strong>in</strong>gneuron. These potentials, called graded potentials or <strong>in</strong>putpotentials, can spread through the ma<strong>in</strong> body of the cell. Theycan be either excitatory (decreas<strong>in</strong>g the polarization of the cell)or <strong>in</strong>hibitory (<strong>in</strong>creas<strong>in</strong>g the polarization of the cell). The <strong>in</strong>putpotentials are summed at the axon hillock. If the amountof depolarization at the axon hillock is sufficient, an actionpotential is generated; it travels down the axon away from thema<strong>in</strong> cell body.of positive sodium ions <strong>in</strong>to the cell, contribut<strong>in</strong>g further to the depolarization.This self-generat<strong>in</strong>g effect results <strong>in</strong> the action potential.Nerve fibers themselves are poor conductors. The transmission of the actionpotential down the axon is a result of a sequence of depolarizations that occurat the nodes of Ranvier. As one node depolarizes, it triggers the depolarizationof the next node. The action potential travels down the fiber <strong>in</strong> a discont<strong>in</strong>uousfashion, from node to node.
