Biking USA to the MotoGP – Harley Power all the wayDreams over a few beers can come true!Roger Harvey of Pukekohe has long held a dream - to travel to the MotoGP in Laguna-Seca. This winter thatdream was realised, with bells on, when Roger and fellow Ulysses Club rider Howard Mansell from Papakuraheaded off for Los Angeles, with their wives Robyn and Jayne following a few days later. The plan? To pick up acouple of Harleys in LA and take to the hot highways of the west, covering four states in 3 ½ weeks.The guys introduced the shiny Harleys - Roger’s 2007 Fat Boyand Howard’s Heritage Softail - to the girls, then it was offto experience the thrills of LA, GPS at the ready, starting withKnott’s Berry Farm. The dream was well and truly underway!Robyn tells the story: “We knocked ourselves out at the BerryFarm, and the next day went to the Getty Center – it wasmagnificent! Barely 10yrs old, it looked like a Mediterraneanvillage perched on the hill overlooking LA and encompassedall the arts, indoors and out, including the architecture anddelightful spiral garden (with many NZ flaxes). Roger and Iparticularly enjoyed the room full of Rembrandts and Jayne andHoward loved the outdoors. We needed to cool off so madeour way to Malibu where Howard had a dip with the pelicans,then back to Santa Monica pier for more thrills - of every kind.Immediately spotted hot chicks with tiny fluffy dogs in bags,beach volleyball studs & studesses, Elvis singing on the beachand Roger’s first ferris wheel ride! The red setting sun was easyto view due to smog that clouded the beach - and good olefish’n’chips by the sea.“We had a spot of fun coming home in the dark when both GPSwent on the blink, leaving us totally lost - eek! But don’t panic,we knew where we were headed and with great signage on thefreeway made our weary way home. We’re convinced it was theheavy smog and damp atmosphere that caused it, as we wereback online once we moved into clear air.“The Fourth of July and it was all go to see as much as we could.The Mansells had a day of rest and preparation for their visitto rellies in Tucson, while the Harveys went south to LongBeach to see what was for many years the world’s largest ship,the Queen Mary, and tour the Russian submarine Scorpion,commissioned during the Cold War. It was fascinating, but gladwe weren’t part of the 75 cramped crew!“Long Beach was gearing up for a big day of celebrations forFourth of July with fireworks spectacular in the evening but atad too crowded for us so we headed over to the Marina for afabulous lunch in the cool breeze. There were plenty of touristshops and beachside entertainment and, believe it or not, a realpirate - complete with beaded beard, talking parrot and wench.38Support your local business www.elocal.co.nz
The foreshore at Long Beach was spacious and very inviting forthe public to use and enjoy, plenty of parking and grassed forpicnics. The immense scale of this port was amazing and we hada chance to stop and marvel at the nuclear power station nearby.We dined at a local Italian restaurant but as we’re not accustomedto the American supersized portions yet, we had doggy bags totake home. Made it back in time to enjoy the Disney fireworksspectacular.Next morning, farewell to our friends at 5:30am for their flight toTucson and we headed to San Diego. It was a great feeling forRoger to finally ‘open her up’ on the magnificent 8 lane freeway.Speed limit is 65 mph but most traffic scoots along at a cool 80mph! We noticed the definite temperature change to cooler airalong the coast. California is the Garden State and we’ve neverseen or smelled so many acres of tomatoes! Much of the coastis Navy/Defence Force land & we passed another nuclear powerinstallation.“We cruised up to the USS Midway in downtown San Diego,extending her life of service as an aircraft carrier museum. OMG- it was massive! Yep, maybe even bigger than that. It was prettyexciting to be onboard, well organised, great audio tour anddisplays. There was even a mini amusements area. It’s hard tocomprehend the complexity and incredible organisation requiredfor this floating city of 4,500 crew. That’s 1,000 loaves of breadeach day … and like the Scorpion, some very hot, uncomfortableand dangerous jobs. We enjoyed some fresh air on the flightdeck and viewed a variety of fighter planes with their fold-upwings. Very impressive.“Next, to Seaworld. What a show! We especially enjoyed thescreaming crowd being showered with gallons of water. We haddinner there, they sure know how to feed crowds quickly. Someweird and wonderful sights, including upside-down tiny blackand white porpoises and funny puffins. We found a great motelat nearby Mission Beach, a popular, casual surfie spot.“On Sunday morning, we made our way further south alongthe Silver Strand (more Naval land, past US Space & NavalCommand Center and the training ground for Navy Seals) tovisit the grand Hotel Del Coronado, built 1888, 757 rooms!The entrance foyer was breath-taking in this fabulous woodenVictorian building. Coronet chandeliers, brunch for a mereUS$69. (Movie buffs will know it from Marilyn Monroe’s SomeLike It Hot). Wandered the grounds & beach with meltingicecreams, then a short trip to Imperial beach to view the surfscene. Very close to the border, it’s easy to paddle up the coastfor illegal immigrants and drug-runners, so plenty of sheriffsaround.
