In workplace, we do experience worker adoptsopposite “personality” when confronted with different work situations.2.1.2.2 Risk Compensation TheoryAdam (1995) suggested that we all, to some extent, build an element of uncertainty into ourlife to increase reward. He further proposed that there is a “risk thermostat” to balance risktaking and the value we placed on the reward. The basic assumption of this theory issummarized as follows (Mohanna and Chamber 2000)• Everyone has propensity to take risk• This propensity depends on the potential reward of risk taking• Individual risk-taking decisions are a balanced act on perceptions of risk againstpotential rewards.The risk compensation theory develops along the same lines of thinking on theacceptability of risk. The thinking comes from a legal case, Edwards v NCB [1949] (citedin McGuinness and Smith, 1999), in which it was judged that a computation must be madewhere the quantum of risk is placed on one scale and the sacrifice involved in the measurefor averting the risk is placed on the other. One of the shortcomings of this riskcompensation theory would seem to define accidents as consequence of risk taking andindividual decisions which is a result of a balancing act between the effects those accidentshave on us and the value we place on the rewards. This may contradict with safetyprofessionals on elimination of hazards and move towards total abolition of accidents.9
The perceptions of safety vary dramatically among individuals. Safety behaviors andattitudes at work are being driven by appropriate risk perception. It would be necessary toappreciate the general safety concepts of the electrical workers in the study by formulatingstructure questions in the interviews and questionnaires.2.1.3 Electrical HazardsElectrical safety involves a thorough understanding on the electrical hazards so that we willhave the correct perception in development of protective strategies. The National Institutefor Occupational Safety and Health has prepared a student manual of Safety and Health forElectrical Trade (NIOSH Publication No. 2002-123), in which electrical hazards arebroadly classified as follows.2.1.3.1 ShockElectric Shock is the physical stimulation that occurs when electric current passes throughthe body (Cadick, 2000). The degree of danger from electrical shock depends on theamount, duration, path of the shocking current and the general physical condition of theperson receiving shock. The damages of electric shocks arising from varying amount ofcurrent passing through the body are summarized in Table1.10
