Significant amounts <strong>of</strong> ascorbic acid are rapidly oxidized <strong>in</strong>to DHA when added to astrongly bicarbonate-buffered copper-contam<strong>in</strong>ated dr<strong>in</strong>k<strong>in</strong>g <strong>water</strong> (III). The results alsodemonstrate that DHA is further decomposed <strong>in</strong>to oxalic- and threonic acid <strong>in</strong>bicarbonate-buffered copper-contam<strong>in</strong>ated dr<strong>in</strong>k<strong>in</strong>g <strong>water</strong>. Thus, copper-contam<strong>in</strong>ateddr<strong>in</strong>k<strong>in</strong>g <strong>water</strong> could possibly deplete <strong>vitam<strong>in</strong></strong> C and hence <strong>in</strong>terfere with <strong>vitam<strong>in</strong></strong> C uptakefrom the stomach and <strong>in</strong>test<strong>in</strong>e, lead<strong>in</strong>g to <strong>vitam<strong>in</strong></strong> C deficiencies. Furthermore, peopleconsum<strong>in</strong>g this type <strong>of</strong> <strong>water</strong> will most likely <strong>in</strong>gest, or generate more DHA <strong>in</strong> theirstomachs than people us<strong>in</strong>g bottled <strong>water</strong>. The impact <strong>of</strong> long-term <strong>in</strong>take <strong>of</strong> DHA andoxalic acid obta<strong>in</strong>ed from <strong>vitam<strong>in</strong></strong> C supplemented copper-contam<strong>in</strong>ated dr<strong>in</strong>k<strong>in</strong>g <strong>water</strong> isnot known.48
