queen’s birthday and diamond jubileecocktail partyOn the 68th anniversary of D Day the DefenceAcademy held its annual Cocktail Party in the Forumof the Cormorant Building. The event is held eachyear to thank the many organisations and individuals whohave been of particular assistance and who have supportedthe Defence Academy over the preceding year. Membersof the local community including ‘sponsors’ of overseasstudents, local office holders and service providers attended,alongside industry sponsors, academic and contractuallinks. Staff from across the Shrivenham-based parts of theAcademy were involved in organising and acting as hostsfor the evening. This year’s was an extra special event as wewere also celebrating Her Majesty’s Diamond Jubilee. TheDirector General of the Defence Academy, Mr Peter Watkins CBEgave a speech of welcome to those assembled in the impressivecircular hall beneath the flags of our friends and allies. He paidthanks to the Lord Lieutenant of Oxfordshire, Tim Stevenson,for kindly unveiling a cairn at the front of the building tocommemorate the Diamond Jubilee – this complements one thatwas placed on the Ridgeway in 1977 to mark the Silver Jubilee.18
