editorialWelcome to the October & November edition of theShrivenham Station Community News (SSCN). Bythe time you read this, the new ‘Term’ will be wellunderway and hopefully all our newcomers will have settled in(have you?). It always feels a bit strange writing this bit as it hasto be done so far in advance before publication in order to fitin with the publisher’s timescales. More about publishers later.Summer came and went, most of it, for me at least, seemingly inthe rain. As ever in any military establishment people come andpeople go – that’s the nature of our lives; we can’t record everyonewho crosses our threshold in one direction or the other, but Iwould like to acknowledge Captain Phil Burrell RN who was Headof Support at the Defence Academy Headquarters until August.Captain Phil, sorry, I should now say Commodore Phil, as he left uson promotion bound for the Ministry, was a great supporter of thispublication. He was not only was a frequent contributor but alsoprovided very effective ‘top cover’: thank you Sir, we wish you wellfor the future.I mentioned publishers…. You may notice that this editionlooks or feels slightly different to its predecessors. Due to variousreasons, not least cost, we have changed the way we do things.Forces and Corporate Publishing Ltd has kindly agreed to takeover the production of our magazine. They are a well establishedcompany and produce many similar military journals already –we look forward to a long and happy link with them. The mainadvantage to us is that the publication now costs us nothing(except time!) to produce.The advertising is nowthe responsibility of thepublisher so the secondgreat advantage is thatI haven’t got to sell orchase advertisers anymore. It really is a ‘winwin situation’. I rightlypraised our old publishersin the last edition, andonce again I thank them,Information Press, for allthat they did for us overthe years.In this magazine you will find coverage of a variety of interestingthings including the rather moist Music & Fireworks event, the PlayDays event, the Queen’s Birthday Cocktail Party, Splicing the MainBrace and Minden Day.The answer to the last competition is: The China House was a)Used for storing and displaying pieces of valuable China (Porcelain)and b) it is thought to have been designed by Indigo Jones.
