visit to thedefence capability centre by year 8,the john of gaunt school, trowbridgeIand some other pupils with a talent for science visited theDefence Capability Centre (DCC) of the Defence Academyat Shrivenham to see and explore the fields of science inthe military. We knew straight away that it was different fromschool because we had to have passes and then listen to asafety and security briefing given by our fabulous host AnneOwen; a big thank you to her for arranging it for us.Our first talk was given in the Ammunition Hall wherewe also watched some videos explaining certain typesof ammunition and failed experiments. It was extremelyinteresting, especially when we got to hold an ammunitionfragment and told to imagine it hurtling towards us. It was thenthat we could fully appreciate the risks to the military. We sawsome of the big guns that fire the ammunition and then oneof my friends as ‘Number 1’ and another as ‘Number 2’ weredrilled on loading a gun so that the rest of us could see howeverything worked. We would all agree that it is complicatedand we also appreciated the hard work the soldiers have to doto quickly load and fire the gun. I respect them immensely.Next was ‘body armour’. While we were at the’ body armour’station we learned the different types of materials used tomake it. I would not want to wear the whole suit for sure! Oneof the boys tried one on and was challenged to run up somestairs, along the back of the room, back down some more stairsand then back to us. He was exhausted and we all thought hewas crazy but he loved it! It was very interesting learning abouthow body armour was made and how it saves many lives. Wewere shown a breast plate that had been shot at and told thatthe wearer had survived because of its protection. We could appreciatehow important this field of science is. I learnt that scientists areconstantly working to improve and make the armour better and lighter.After viewing the body armour we had lunch to be followed by a visitto the ‘light weapons armoury’.We entered a room full of all sorts of guns; the walls were coveredwith them of all different types and age. We were shown the moremodern guns that are being used today and shown some ‘awful’ gunsand told why they didn’t work, e.g. some countries make their gunsshorter so they are easier to fit through doors but the short barrelprevents the bullet getting up to speed so that it didn’t have enoughenergy when it reached the target. We were told about and taught abit about velocity (I think the lecturer thought we were more talentedthan we are) because it is an extremely important part of gun design.When we had worked out the velocity of a gun, the lecturer allowedus to walk around and view the guns and ammunition. We were reallyexcited when he allowed us hold some of those that were on the table.We all had great fun.The final part of the day was spent learning about tanks. We saw howsmall and cramped they were inside, we were told about the stations/ranks and how you move up each rank. After viewing some videosof tanks in action and learning about the armour used on them, wewere able to climb on those that were on display. I speak on behalf ofmyself but I’m sure that everyonewho came with me, including theteachers, would agree that it wasone of the best school trips we haveever been on and we very muchappreciate the time people gaveto speak to us and teach us abouttheir field of work.
