palm desert campusOn trackA new program in integrated liberal studies will save PalmDesert Campus students both time <strong>and</strong> m<strong>one</strong>y.College of the Desert is a partner in the new degree program.Students beginning their academic careers at COD are puton a path to finish their bachelor’s degree or a multi-subjectteaching credential in four years instead of five at Cal State SanBernardino. The two schools have a dual admission programwith counselors available at both campuses to guide studentsthrough their required classes. If students choose the dual admissionpath, there is no need to reapply when transferring to<strong>CSUSB</strong>. Application fees are waived as well.The multi-subject credential allows the individual to teachat the elementary school level immediately after receiving theB.A. degree without continuingteacher preparation classes in afifth year.“There is a misconception thatadditional teachers aren’t neededin the Coachella Valley. This isdefinitely not the case,” says Kim Hartnett-Edwards, director ofpost graduate education programs at the Palm Desert Campus.“Two Coachella Valley school districts, Desert S<strong>and</strong>s Unified<strong>and</strong> Palm Springs Unified, rank as two of the largest schooldistricts among 30 others in Riverside County. Teachers are inhigh dem<strong>and</strong> to meet the growing needs.” ●The gold st<strong>and</strong>ardThe 23,000-square-foot building has no harmful chemicals such as formaldehyde<strong>and</strong> arsenic in the wood, carpeting, paint <strong>and</strong> glue. It’s all very ecological.Even the waste left from the project is being recycled. “It’s the thing to dotoday,” Fred J<strong>and</strong>t, dean of the Palm Desert Campus, told <strong>one</strong> newspaper lastJuly. “It’s the right thing to do.” When the Palm Desert Campus’s Health SciencesBuilding opens to classes in the fall, university officials hope it will gaingold LEED certification. That’s the second highest national ranking a buildingcan get from Leadership in Energy <strong>and</strong> Environmental Design.
