Gettingto know different cultures <strong>and</strong> placeshas inspired him to get a camera <strong>and</strong>begin shooting. His pictures have nowappeared on popular Web sites <strong>and</strong> innewspapers. Reaching this point hasnot been easy. But he believes persistenceis what has made the differencein his life.“We cannot be sure of having somethingto live for unless we are willing todie for it,” said Ernesto Guevara, the Argentineanpolitical figure who was partof a socialist revolutionary movementin Cuba. Those words have helped Torresbelieve in himself.With the goal of becoming a professionalphotographer, Torres beganbuilding a portfolio of work by photographingb<strong>and</strong>s <strong>and</strong> entertainers atconcerts. His photographs of popularartists include Jennifer Lopez, GabrielGarcia, <strong>Paul</strong> Rodriguez <strong>and</strong> Joe Rogan,as well as legendary Mexican singerssuch as Antonio Aguilar <strong>and</strong> Joan Sebastian.Torres graduated in June 2008 with abachelor’s degree in marketing. ●Wishes, science<strong>and</strong> supportHispanic <strong>and</strong> low-income studentsheaded for careers in fields such as computerscience, biology, chemistry <strong>and</strong>biochemistry are sitting prettier theselean budget days with a $2.4 million TitleV Hispanic-Serving Institution grant.The program, called the “Be SMART”project, targets academic disciplines inthe Federal Science <strong>and</strong> MathematicsAccess to Retain Talent initiative offeredat <strong>CSUSB</strong>. Those programs also includemath, physics, geological sciences <strong>and</strong>M<strong>and</strong>arin, Japanese, Korean, Russian,Arabic <strong>and</strong> Turkish languages.The project was developed by thethree separate <strong>CSUSB</strong> offices: DianePodolske, director of service learning<strong>and</strong> Community University Partnerships;Pamela Langford, director of<strong>alumni</strong> affairs; <strong>and</strong> Carol Dixon, interimdirector of the Career DevelopmentCenter.“This is a huge win for our students,”said Dixon. “Having additional resourcesto provide career training, <strong>alumni</strong>support, <strong>and</strong> service learning internshipswill really prepare them to enterthe workforce or graduate programs.”28 | summer 2008
