The Board of la Biennale di Venezia, chaired by Paolo Baratta, is alsoawarding Golden Lions for Lifetime Achievement under director Massimiliano Gioni’s proposalto Maria Lassnig (born 1919 in Kappel am Krappfeld, Austria) and Marisa Merz (born in 1926 inTurin, Italy).The awards of the International Jury are assigned with the following motivations:Golden Lion for best artist in the International Exhibition Il Palazzo Enciclopedico (TheEncyclopedic Palace) to Tino Sehgal for the excellence and innovation that his practice hasbrought opening the field of artistic disciplines.Silver Lion for a promising young artist in the International Exhibition Il Palazzo Enciclopedico(The Encyclopedic Palace) to Camille Henrot for contributing a new work that in a sensuous anddynamic manner is able to capture our times.A special mention for Sharon Hayes for making us re-think the importance of alterity and thecomplexity of the interplay between the personal and public.Another special mention for Roberto Cuoghi for the significant and compelling contribution tothe International Exhibition.The Jury paid particular attention to countries that managed to provide original insight intoexpanded practice within their region. la Biennale di VeneziaMaria Lassnig and Marisa MerzGolden Lions for Lifetime Achievementof the 55 th International Art ExhibitionMaria Lassnig and Marisa Merz are the recipients of the Golden Lions for Lifetime Achievementof the 55 th International Art Exhibition – Il Palazzo Enciclopedico (The Encyclopedic Palace)(Venice, Giardini and Arsenale, June 1– November 24, 2013).The decision has been made by the Board of la Biennale di Venezia, chaired by Paolo Baratta,following the proposal of the curator of the 55th International Exhibition, Massimiliano Gioni,who presented the following motivations:Maria Lassnig“For more than sixty years Maria Lassnig has investigated representation, both of the body and ofthe individual, in paintings that often depict the artist in a state of restlessness, excitement, ordespair. Through her self-portraits, Lassnig has composed a personal encyclopedia of selfrepresentationand, through what she calls ‘body-awareness paintings,’ has used painting as aninstrument of self-analysis. Lassnig, at ninety-three years old, represents a unique example ofobstinacy and independence that deserves to be celebrated with the Golden Lion for LifetimeAchievement.”Marisa Merz“Since the 1960s, Marisa Merz has been a singular voice in contemporary art. Beginning with herearly work, which she carried out alongside the protagonists of Arte Povera, Marisa Merz hasdistinguished herself by her reflection on the domestic realm and handicraft techniquesstereotypically associated with female labor. The artist has developed a personal language inwhich painting, sculpture, and drawing give shape to apparently archaic and primordial images.These contemporary icons and stylized faces rise to the surface as divine apparitions. Herepiphanic paintings, as if cultivated through years in solitude, invite us to look at the world withclosed eyes – as the artist suggested with the title of her 1975 exhibition, With Closed Eyes, The EyesAre Extraordinarily Open.”The awards will be officially presented to the two artists on June 1, 2013, at 11 a.m., during theopening and award ceremony of the exhibition.Biographical notesMaria Lassnig, born 1919 in Kappel am Krappfeld, Austria, lives and works in Vienna.Since the beginning of her career, Maria Lassnig has focused on self-portraiture. Her early worksare markedly expressionistics and rooted both in the early twentieth-century figurative traditionsand in the reflection on the body developed by the Viennese Actionists.
