RRTC ON COMMUNITY INTEGRATION OF PERSONS WITH <strong>TBI</strong>After a moderate-<strong>to</strong>-severe <strong>TBI</strong>, many people complain that they cannot think as well asthey did be<strong>for</strong>e. There are several different types of problems that you may notice <strong>with</strong>your thinking. The different kinds of thinking problems are listed below. There are alsoseveral ideas you can try <strong>to</strong> deal <strong>with</strong> these problems.Poor attention/concentrationProblems <strong>with</strong> concentration are common after a moderate-<strong>to</strong>-severe<strong>TBI</strong>. Concentration is your ability <strong>to</strong> pay attention <strong>to</strong> things so thatyou can remember them later. After a moderate-<strong>to</strong>-severe <strong>TBI</strong>, youmay find that you have a hard time paying attention <strong>to</strong> things. Youmay be distracted easily. If you are getting distracted, it may take youmore time <strong>to</strong> do things. If you do not pay careful attention <strong>to</strong>something, you may have more problems remembering thein<strong>for</strong>mation later.Concentration and attention problems are common after a moderate-<strong>to</strong>-severe <strong>TBI</strong>.Having these problems does not mean that you are “going crazy.” For most people,problems <strong>with</strong> attention get better over time. There are many things that you can do <strong>to</strong>help attention and concentration problems get better.<strong>What</strong> can I do?Be sure <strong>to</strong> get enough sleep at night. Take regular rest breaks duringthe day. In addition <strong>to</strong> any changes in your attention or concentrationrelated <strong>to</strong> your brain injury, fatigue or tiredness can make concentrationeven more difficult. When it becomes hard <strong>to</strong> concentrate, take a shortbreak and relax. Between 15 – 30 minutes should be enough time <strong>for</strong> abreak, but you can adjust these times <strong>to</strong> fit your needs.Page 21
