3 8 Drive system & chassis Safety ComfortDiesel enginesCleaner, more powerful and more economical: the new C-Class also signals the launch of the latest Mercedes-Benz diesel technology. The powerful and quiet enginesimpress with their low emission and fuel-consumption figures.4-cylinder in-line engines. The 4-cylinder diesel unitwith a choice of four power outputs displays a high levelof sophistication: it offers impressively rich torque andinstantaneous response, even at low revs. What’s more,the diesel engines consume less fuel, have low emissionsand are both quiet and powerful.This is made possible by a wealth of innovative techno-logies. Fourth-generation common-rail diesel technologyimpresses by virtue of an injection pressure increasedto 2000 bar, optimised combustion chambers andextremely precise injectors. Higher ignition pressureand the turbocharger make for high torque in everyengine speed range, while the requisite refinement comescourtesy of two Lanchester balancer shafts. Optimisedalternator management ensures consistent use of theengine’s coasting phases, thus allowing recuperationof kinetic energy. Meanwhile the radiator shutterreduces the aerodynamic drag when the engines requireonly moderate cooling. The current engine generationdelivers impressive output and high torque as wellas reduced fuel consumption and CO 2 emissions.All diesel engines (with the exception of the C 250 CDI4MATIC BlueEFFICIENCY and C 300 CDI 4MATICBlueEFFICIENCY) now feature the ECO start/stop function.The 4-cylinder diesel engines comply with the Euro 5emissions standard and are available with the followingoutputs:– C 180 CDI BlueEFFICIENCY developing 88 kW anda peak torque of 300 Nm– C 200 CDI BlueEFFICIENCY developing 100 kW anda peak torque of 360 Nm– C 220 CDI BlueEFFICIENCY developing 125 kW anda peak torque of 400 Nm– C 250 CDI BlueEFFICIENCY developing 150 kW anda peak torque of 500 Nm

The consumptionoptimisedV6 diesel engine develops 170 kW (expectedto be available from the end of the 2 nd quarter of 2011),making it the most powerful diesel drive system withcommon-rail technology in the new C-Class. Precise andfast injectors, a high injection pressure of up to 1600 bar,and an optimised turbocharger combine to produce animmense peak torque of 540 Nm – all of which adds upto effortlessly superior pulling power in all drivingsituations.
