52 Drive system & chassis Safety ComfortAssistance systemsThe C-<strong>Class</strong> has always been a car in which convenience has played a major role. And thanks to convenience-enhancing assistance systems such asSpeed Limit Assist Plus, Parking Guidance and the reversing camera, it more than lives up to this reputation.Speed Limit Assist (included with the optionalCOMAND Online system). Speed Limit Assist can detectspeed-limit signs and display them as symbols on theinstrument cluster. They remain displayed there untilthe speed restriction is lifted or changed. To this end, awindscreen-mounted camera monitors the area in frontof the car on a permanent basis. The camera filtersout round traffic signs, be they speed-limit signs atthe side of the road or on a gantry above the road.To detect the signs, the system also scans the datastored on the navigation system’s digital map, thus alsoenabling the identification and display of the signsseen when entering or leaving some towns and villages.Speed Limit Assist is especially helpful on routes withvariable speed limits or road works. In addition,Speed Limit Assist compares the signposted speedlimits with the data stored in the navigation system.Speed Limit Assist Plus can even indicate temporary speed limits

The reversing camerawith wide-angle lens films the area directly behind thecar and sends the images to the COMAND display. It isactivated when reverse gear is engaged, thus enhancingsafety when reversing into a parking space. The reversingcamera is only available in conjunction withCOMAND Online.PARKTRONIC incl. Parking Guidance (optional).PARKTRONIC can warn the driver automatically if spacein front of or behind the car becomes tight when parkingor manoeuvring. The system operates on the echosounder principle, Sensors on the front and rear bumpersemit ultrasound signals which are then reflected byother vehicles or obstacles. A microcomputer calculatesthe current distance and informs the driver by meansof dis plays in the instrument cluster and audible signals.Parking damage can therefore be prevented.Parking Guidance can help the driver when parking andwhen looking for a parking space: ultrasonic sensors inthe side front bumper can measure the length of parkingspaces parallel to the car automatically if the car drivespast at a speed of 35 km/h or less. Parking Guidancestarts once a suitable space has been found and reversegear has been engaged. It provides the driver withvisible and audible instructions regarding the correctsteering angle as well as the turn-in and turn-backpoints on the instrument cluster.
