This office also integratedadvice from the panel substructure in a mannersuitable for policy decisions by the JOIDESExecutive Committee (EXCOM). The JOIDESOffice also produced the JOIDES JournalJOIDES Science Advisory StructureThe JOIDES SAS was restructured in 1996to better undertake the initiatives and objectivescontained in the 1996 long-range plan,“Understanding our Dynamic Earth throughOcean Drilling” (www.odplegacy.org/PDF/Admin/Long_Range/ODP_LRP_1996.pdf).The SAS structure as of 2003, at the end ofODP operations, is discussed below.JOIDES was responsible for establishing scientificobjectives for ODP legs through the SASthat involved more than 100 scientists andengineers on standing committees and panelsand almost 100 in the shorter-lived planninggroups. Each committee, panel, planninggroup, and working group operated undera mandate and with guidelines on membershipand frequency of meetings.
