A detaileddescription of the JOIDES Resolution, the toolsused for coring and acquisition of downholedata, and the shipboard laboratories as configuredin the later stages of ODP are includedon the ODP Legacy Web site (www.odplegacy.org/operations).Drilling. Coring, and Logging StatisticsDuring almost 20 years of ODP operations, the JOIDES Resolution traveled 355,781 milesand occupied 669 sites, covering all the oceansof the world. The most northerly site (Site911) was located at 80.5°N, 8.2°E in the ArcticOcean, and the most southerly (Site 693) at70.8°S, 14.6°W, was in the Weddell Sea nearAntarctica. Coring operations were successfullyconducted in water depths ranging from37.5 meters (123 feet) to 5,980 meters (19,620feet). The deepest hole drilled extended 2,111meters (6,936 feet) below the seafloor. Atotal of 36,365 cores were collected, yielding222,430 meters (729,757 feet) of core materialfor study. Details of the operational data foreach leg of ODP (Legs 100–210) are availablefrom the ODP Legacy Web site (www.odplegacy.org/operations/overview.html).Of the sites drilled by ODP, 55 were designated“legacy sites,” with downhole instrumentsemplaced to make long-term measurementsof the subseafloor environment and/or reentrycones installed to allow future use of the existingholes.“One of the outstanding legaciesof scientific ocean drilling has beenthe development of special drillingand coring tools and technologies… .”The ODP Legacy Web site (www.odplegacy.org/science_results/leg_summaries.html)contains a summary of the ports of call, startand end dates, site numbers, ocean region,Staff Scientists, Co-Chief Scientists, and linksto related information (Leg Summary, participantslist, photographs, and leg logo) for eachleg sailed by ODP (see the “ODP Leg Summary”table for an excerpt of this information).Operational andLaboratory AdvancementsThe capabilities of the JOIDES Resolution andthe tools and techniques used to address theobjectives of ODP were continually improvedduring the life span of the Program.
