ONE of the funniest things I have everseen a dog man do involved Sandgate’sShorty Burns.Shorty had a dog called Moss Dignity. The dog was a handy little dog, black andhad won a few races. He was getting up in the grades andShorty was getting a bit dirty that peoplewere knocking off his price.Moss Dignity was in at Lawnton oneday. Shorty came to me that morning andsaid he’d just got back from Cabbage TreeCreek.Shorty’s mate Tony Sheppard had a rowboat in the Creek and that morning Shortyhad taken Moss Dignity to the Creek for amarathon swim.Tony and Shorty rowed that boat up anddown Cabbage Tree Creek so many timeswith poor Moss Dignity behind it thatTony’s arms were aching and they couldn’tgo on.Shorty told me the story on the way tothe track.Moss Dignity was hot favourite for arace that afternoon at Lawnton, but Shortytold everyone he wasn’t going to back him.Moss Dignity got the blows and wentout to 5-1.Shorty came over to me just before thestart and couldn’t believe the price. Hejumped in and backed Moss Dignityknowing full well he’d swum half way toSouth America that morning. That’s the sort of bloke Shorty was. Ofcourse “marathon swimmer” MossDignity couldn’t pick his feet up andfinished unplaced.Shorty was one of the funniest guys Iever knew.He told me he was heading to Lismorewith Moss Dignity for his first start underSyd Norrislights.I asked if he had ever put the dogaround under lights and he said no.But Shorty said he had given the dog a“liven up” under a set of street lights nearhis house. Of course Moss Dignity didn’twin at Lismore. He was a funny fella that Shorty. For aslong as anyone knew him, he wore abandaid cross the bridge of his nose. ButShorty didn’t wear glasses. No one everfound out why he wore the bandaid.Talking of characters in greyhoundracing, there are few better than vetCharlie Welch.I love the guy.He is always a friendly face at anygreyhound meeting you see him at. Henever changes. He’s always happy to see everyone andlend a hand.I’ve seen Charlie charge onto aracetrack to catch fallers, carry dogs backthat have broken down, help with strapping, even putting on racing rugs fornewcomers. One night he stitched some splitwebbing on a dog of mine at Ipswich andeven told the stewards the job they wantedMemoriesdone could wait but my dog’s webbingcouldn’t.That’s Charlie and he’s like that witheveryone and everyone appreciates it.I write this about Charlie because Iwant to make sure I’m in his good bookswhen he finally puts that 14-year-oldtrotter of his into a proper race. I realisehe’s been working it up to a “big plonk”sometime sooner or later and I don’t wantto be left out.I found this article in an old greyhoundmagazine I had.I thought it might be of interest to someof you.Albert Hauff, President of theMetropolitan Club, and Vice President ofthe NCA is the oldest active member inCoursing in Queensland. He has been trainer, owner, proprietor, committeeman, steward, vice president andpresident. He was a patron at Plumpton meetingsand won a Waterloo Cup at Toowoombawith Sunny Beaufort in 1933.He had to go to Warwick to get paperschanged when there was no office inBrisbane.Albert Hauff has coursed dogs atBrassall, Rocklea, Toowoomba andWarwick. Hawk leaves his mark long after his deathPETER Rayner and his mate LaurieRounds decided to import a well bred Irishbitch in 2005.She is Kathy’s Kitten a half sister toReading Masters winner Farloe Rio. Her damCathy Ann is a sister to Irish champion LateLate Show. When it came to mating her there wasnever any doubt about which sire Raynerwould plump for.It had to be his champion galloper FaithfulHawk (Credibility-Angel’s Faith) the 1999Queensland greyhound of the year afterwinning the Golden Easter Egg and a host ofother rich sprints. But Faithful Hawk had tragically died in2002, four years before Kathy’s Kitten hadarrived in Australia.Fortunately for Rayner there was onefrozen semen straw still available from FaithfulHawk. It had been in storage with “The Hawk’s”former studmaster Sam Cauchi all this time.Trouble was Sam had to find it which took acouple of days. The mating produced 12 pups in May 2006and six went south to Rounds, and the otherhalf dozen stayed with Rayner.Letter to theEditorDear Sir,Club A class members who were recentlyunsuccessful with a no-confidence move onthe Directors of Greyhounds Qld should beimmediately replaced by their clubs.None of them had a mandate from theirmembers and their contempt for their fellowclub members demands their dismissal.Greyhound licensees who collude withthe Harness Industry to hinder GreyhoundsQld’s plans for a stand alone complex to suittheir own agendas are deluding themselvesand their complicity with the Harnessindustry can only be described as treachery. The harness industry wreaks greatdamage on Greyhounds Qld by their refusalto rectify the iniquitous Product-Coagreement which has already benefitted themby about $30 million. The Albion Park Trust should also becondemned for putting greyhound welfareat risk in summer by not giving the BrisbaneClub one day a week first use of triallingfacilities and allowing the harness club tostand over the greyhound industry.Being 50% stakeholders in the complexlicensees are entitled to be bitter about theirtreatment by the TrustKev GallowayWorth DoingCredibilityNo LiabilityFAITHFUL HAWKPretty FearlessAngel’s FaithAngel TearsSWIFT HAWKPhantom FlashSpiral NikitaMinnies NikitaKathy’s KittenLarkhill JoCathy AnnUllid Citrate“It was just an exercise we did,” saidRayner. “We found out we had the one strawleft so decided to use it.”The result is a more than handy litter ofwhich Swift Hawk, recent winner of the KenSmith Memorial at Capalaba, is the standoutalthough not the fastest.“Irish Lass is the quickest of them all butshe has had some problems,” said Rayner.“She’s run 19.60 at Capalaba though.”Irish Lass will stay in the kennel as a futurebroodbitch.Swift Hawk has been a 25.79 winneraround the Gold Coast, run 19.80 up Capalabaand 30.19 around Albion Park. The litter also includes Stylish Hawk,Highly Toxic and Sweet Soda Pop.Kathy’s Kitten has since headed south toRenzo Park ComplexPET TRANSPORT SERVICECoveringGrafton - CasinoAreastoGold CoastBrisbaneToowoombaRounds for a litter.“I’m happy with our experiment,” saidRayner.“Swift Hawk is a very good dog withuntapped potential around Albion Park.
