Larry and wife Leanneside of the greyhound industry.“There is nothing to the operation but Igenerally refer clients to Greg Sternbergwho has progesterone testing facilities whichI don’t,” he said. He’s in the process of rearing a couple ofTechnoman-Hyponui pups he bought fromPeter Bryers before he headed back to NewZealand to live. “I love them, they are good, bold pups.”Larry says he has noticed one factor thatis the difference in good and not so goodgreyhounds as pups.“I’ve found you cannot tire the good onesand I’ve spoken to a number of breeders ofgreat greyhounds who have found the same.”His mum May lives in the family home atthe back of Larry’s and comes over fourmornings a week for Larry to cook herbreakfast. May won $1.2 million in Gold Lottoa few years ago.Larry’s lifetime involvement ingreyhound racing has seen some ups anddowns. He’s got some fabulous stories to tellbut none better than the night Frostylee madeher racing debut.“Peter Coleman (brother of NSWtraining legend Jim) and I were great matesthen (in the late 1970s) and one of the firstdogs I trained was called super Hooper,” hesaid,.“I was taking Super Hooper to Peter’sstraight track to gallop and he was goingpretty good so I was setting him up for a bet.”At the time Coleman had a Temlee-FrostyAngel bitch owned by Jim Grundon that wouldrace as Frostylee.”She was flying,” said Larry. “Peter tookher everywhere and everywhere she went shebroke the track record, even up toBundaberg, and she was still and unracedmaiden.”It was decided Frostylee would go toLismore for a 512m maiden. Larry went toowith Super Hooper.“It was a morning and night meeting andSuper Hooper was in the morning programand won. I was working for $100 a week inthose days and I backed Super Hooper at 5-1,” said Larry. “Jim Grundon and I went todinner and then headed back out to the trackbecause Frostylee was in a maiden thatnight.”Larry played up all his then sizeablewinnings on Frostylee.“We got 3-1 and the worst we took waseven to win $14,000 among all of us who werethere,” he said. “The betting was done all atthe same time and it was done perfectly. Therewere 10 bookies fielding.”Larry reports Frostylee led by threelengths out of the starting boxes, was six infront at the first turn, 16 in front in the backstraight and led by half the straight about 10metres from the finish line.“I turned away to see something, I can’tremember just what, maybe the time orsomething, and when I looked back there shewas crashing to the track, sliding along137JohnstonStreet,Casino,NSW2470Ph (02)66622162Fax (02)66625602towards the finish,” he said.Frostylee knocked herself outmomentarily. She got up and staggered pastthe past … in fourth place.“I had enough money left to buy one canof Coke,” said Larry. All hell broke loose at Lismore. Stewardsran about, opened an inquiry, walked thetrack and at one stage thought someone hadeven shot her with a pellet.“The bitch was normal when she waschecked out,” said Larry. “It was one of thosethings. She just put a foot wrong and fell.”Larry reckons that was destiny steppingin.Frostylee soon after went on to win therich Dapto Maiden series, then won a featurerace at Harold Park, the Gabba Constellationand was the fastest bitch ever at Harold Parkwhen she raced. She would go to stud and produce JimGrundon’s star sprinter Magic Gull theDerby winner and track record breaker atthe Gabba.“Peter Seaton bred Frostylee. TheSeatons are now into racehorses,” saidLarry. There days Larry has just bought twoWhere’s Pedro pups from Dave Robartsonand as usual is rearing them at home behindhis surgery. He and wife Leanne retain a great love ofgreyhounds and greyhound racing.JimGrundonwithFrostylee(left)Northern Rivers Veterinary ServiceLiz Brown BVSc (Hons)TemleeTangaloaPengalaPretty ShortUngwilla LadPretty NewNewmore’s SecretNO LIABILITYEddy Barry*Annerley FlyerCrimpleneAnnerley AssetThe SmootherSmooth NardaTopping DewLeanne is the daughter of long-timeDowns greyhound man Ron Perrett.Leanne’s sister Leah is married to MarkSaal.Teamplaeamplay y Manor971 Atkinson Dam Road, Churchable, Qld 4311SpellingSeasonal SpellingPre-TrainingWhelpingRearingTrainingContact Mick or FeePh: (07) 54246726 Mob: 0407 975990* Camelot Farms accredited* Reliable friendly service from an experienced team* Reliable weekly transport service by Renzo Park and PTS* Large semen storage bank* Excellent pregnancy rate and litter size* Stud dog semen collection, evaluation and storage* Air-conditioned kennels* In-house progesterone and T4 testing* Price (frozen semen insemination)$484 all inclusive (includes GRA registration)The (February, 2009) Journal Page 7
