WCAI, Cape and Islands NPR StationWCAI’s A Life RememberedEveryone’s life has a story and often that story is summed up in a fewsentences in an obituary buried at the back of the newspaper. But there is alot more worth knowing about people, and WCAI reporter Sean Corcoranrecently launched A Life Remembered to present more detailed portraits oflocal community members who have passed away and to celebrate individualswhose lives made an impact on their family and neighbors. The new series premiered in January and airs the first Monday of eachmonth during Morning Edition and All Things Considered on WCAI. The firstprofile remembers Alice Lopez, 49, the Mashpee tribe’s housing directorwho envisioned an affordable housing community called “WampanoagVillage,” and secured enough grant money to buy the wooded acreage inMashpee where 52 homes will be built.Lopez was a passionate advocate for the Cape’s often overlooked homelesspopulation and wanted to provide a permanent home for tribe memberswho now move from house to house, sleeping on couches and in tents inpeople’s yards.Corcoran interviewed Lopez’s mother, her sister, and her friend and fellow tribemember, Myrna Nuey. You hear the emotionin Nuey’s voice when she talks about Lopez.“She was the essence of what I call a‘native woman.’ The purity that she had inher heart for her people goes beyond wordsand goes beyond anyone’s expectations ofwhat a native woman is all about,” Nueysays, explaining Lopez’s lifelong pride in herheritage and culture. “To come into her presenceand be with her often was an honor.”If you missed the January or February edition of A Life Remembered, listen online at capeandislands.org.
