For example,some herbicides arerestricted in certain states orin specific areas of the state.For up-to-date registration details and currentpermits visit the Australian Pesticides andVeterinary Medicines Authority (APVMA)website: www.apvma.gov.au and refer to weedcontrol contacts in your state (see table above).Safety and trainingPersonal protective equipment (such as protectiveclothing, eye or face shields, and respiratoryprotection) must be used in accordance withthe recommendations stated on the herbicidelabel or permit. Herbicide use training is highlyrecommended and is required for people usingherbicides as part of their job or business. Trainingis recommended for community groups and may berequired if working on public land. Training coursesare run by ChemCert and TAFE in each state. Othertraining courses may be available through stateagencies (e.g. AgTrain in Victoria, SMARTtrain inNew South Wales, and AgForce in Queensland),local councils or non-government organisations.See Section 7 for contact information.By law, you must read the label (or have it read toyou) before using any herbicide product. Alwaysfollow the label instructions. The same applies foroff-label permits.50
Registered herbicidesBefore using a herbicide it is important to checkthat each herbicide product is registered in yourstate or territory for the particular applicationmethod you are planning to use or that theuse is allowed by a relevant permit. The useof certain chemicals off-label is permitted inspecific circumstances in Victoria, as explainedin the ‘Guide to using Agricultural Chemicals inVictoria’, which can be found at www.dpi.vic.gov.au/agriculture/farming-management/chemicaluse/publications/a-guide-to-using-agriculturalchemicals-in-victoria.It may be beneficial to choose herbicidesthat can treat multiple weeds at one time.For information on which herbicide maybe most appropriate in your patch, contactyour local weeds or biosecurity officer.The most commonly used herbicides on asparagusweeds are glyphosate, metsulfuron-methyl,fluroxypyr, 2,4-D, picloram and triclopyr. Neatdiesel is also registered in QLD only for use onenvironmental weeds. Some of these chemicalsare used for all asparagus weeds, while othersare species specific or used in combination.The characteristics of the most commonly usedherbicides are described below. This informationis not necessarily comprehensive and does notimply any recommendation of a specific herbicide.Individual site requirements must be consideredwhen choosing a herbicide. See Section 6 – CaseStudies for examples of where managers haveconsidered their specific situation before applyingchemicals. Many other herbicides containingthese active ingredients, but not mentioned inthis manual, may also be registered for use onasparagus weeds.Glyphosate is a non-selective herbicide usedagainst many annual and perennial broadleafweeds and grasses. It is not residual, meaningit only kills existing plants and is inactivated oncontact with the soil. Glyphosate enters a plantthrough its foliage and the speed of entry dependson the species and where it is applied to the plant.It is absorbed by the leaves and stems and istranslocated throughout the plant and into the rootsystem. Glyphosate inhibits an enzyme requiredfor the production of amino acids used in proteinsynthesis, hence plant growth. On annual weeds, itmay only take between 3 and 7 days to see visibleimpacts but, on perennial plants, it can take over2 weeks. On asparagus weeds, it can take 3–4weeks to see visible impacts. Visible effects ofcontrol may be delayed by cool or cloudy weather.Only healthy and actively growing weeds shouldbe sprayed, as translocation is dependent uponthe sugar transport system (phloem) within theplant being active. Most transportation within thephloem to the plant’s growing points occurs within4 hours and slows thereafter, stopping by 48 hours.Other factors such as plant stress, dust and extremeweather can affect glyphosate uptake in plants.Asparagus weeds often grow closely among nativevegetation and the use of non-selective herbicidescan lead to unacceptable off-target damageunless the application is very carefully targeted.For example, Themeda grasslands, a communitycommonly threatened by asparagus weeds, areparticularly vulnerable to even low amounts ofglyphosate.Note: Do not use surfactants when workingin an aquatic situation and only use herbicideformulations registered for use in aquatic situations.Metsulfuron-methyl is a selective herbicide foruse on broad-leaved plants and some annualgrasses. The residual activity of this herbicide isdependent upon environmental conditions and canvary with soil type, soil pH, temperature, moistureand organic matter. Soil residual activity may bereduced in the presence of high carbon levelsfollowing fire. Half-life estimates for metsulfuronmethylin soil are wide ranging from 14–180 days,with an overall average of 30 days. The residualactivity dissipates faster in acidic soil and in soilswith higher moisture contents, temperatures, and51
