IntroductionWelcome to The University <strong>of</strong> West Alabama and its athletic training program, as an athletic training student orprospective athletic training student. In accepting one <strong>of</strong> these positions, you have taken on a great deal <strong>of</strong>responsibility and have put yourself in a very rewarding position that will hopefully help you meet your pr<strong>of</strong>essionalgoals and objectives. We, as a staff, commend your desire to become a certified athletic trainer and are pleased tohave you within our ranks. The University <strong>of</strong> West Alabama's <strong>Athletic</strong> <strong>Training</strong> Program is nationally accredited bythe Commission on Accreditation <strong>of</strong> <strong>Athletic</strong> <strong>Training</strong> Education (CAATE). Our program, a combination <strong>of</strong> handson experience and structured classroom instruction, prepares our students to sit for the National <strong>Athletic</strong> Trainer’sAssociation Board <strong>of</strong> Certification Exam.As a student member <strong>of</strong> our staff, we have great expectations <strong>of</strong> you. We expect you to be reliable, dependable,loyal, diligent, dedicated, and honest in your efforts. We also expect you to conduct yourself with the highest degree<strong>of</strong> decorum, to be academically sound, and to represent yourself, our staff, our program, the pr<strong>of</strong>ession, and theUniversity with pr<strong>of</strong>essionalism beyond reproach.Being an athletic training student at <strong>UWA</strong> is a significant responsibility. You are not only responsible for thehealth and welfare <strong>of</strong> the athletes in your charge but you represent the University and our program. Any misconductthat compromises the image or integrity <strong>of</strong> this department, <strong>UWA</strong>, or puts the health <strong>of</strong> your athletes at risk isgrounds for dismissal from the athletic training program. Violations <strong>of</strong> procedures or policies <strong>of</strong> this department willbe grounds for a warning from the staff. Repeated violations are grounds for dismissal. Failure to maintainprogression requirements results in academic probation and/or suspension from the athletic training program. Inaddition to academic probation or suspension, the student’s enrollment in the athletic training program may beterminated at any time if, in the judgment <strong>of</strong> the athletic training faculty, the student demonstrates academic, social,or emotional behaviors or physical problems inappropriate to the practice <strong>of</strong> athletic training. Students whose healthstatus and/or clinical performance jeopardize the patients assigned to his/her care may also be dismissed from theathletic training program. Students suspended from the athletic training program may apply for re-admission to theprogram through the <strong>Athletic</strong> <strong>Training</strong> Curriculum Selection Committee when the deficiencies are removed.Students suspended twice from the program are ineligible to re-apply.It is the athletic training and sports medicine staff's intention that your experiences here be enjoyable andeducational. We will attempt to provide you with the opportunity to gain the knowledge and skills necessary to be anoutstanding athletic trainer. In return, we ask for and expect your cooperation, dedication, loyalty, and enthusiasm.Again, welcome to our staff.
