The University <strong>of</strong> West Alabama<strong>Athletic</strong> <strong>Training</strong> ProgramOSHA Compliance StatementBlood borne pathogens are disease causing microorganisms that may be present in human blood. Twopathogens that are <strong>of</strong> special importance to athletic trainers are Hepatitis B Virus (HBV) and HumanImmunodeficiency Virus (HIV). Hepatitis B directly affects the liver by resulting in swelling, soreness, and the loss<strong>of</strong> normal functions to the liver. Human Immunodeficiency Virus affects the immune system by destroying the T-cells which helps prevent disease. At this time, there is no known cure for either. At this time there is a vaccine forprevention <strong>of</strong> HBV that is available.All individuals working within The University <strong>of</strong> West Alabama <strong>Athletic</strong> <strong>Training</strong> & <strong>Sports</strong> <strong>Medicine</strong> <strong>Center</strong>are anticipated to come in contact with blood or other infectious materials while performing their duties. Thepotential for exposure not only exists in the athletic training facilities, but also on the practice and/or competitionfields.These potential areas <strong>of</strong> exposure and disease transmission as well as, techniques <strong>of</strong> transmissionprevention are documented and outlined in the “Health and Safety Policy <strong>of</strong> The University <strong>of</strong> West Alabama<strong>Athletic</strong> <strong>Training</strong> Program”, I have been given. I have read, understand, and will follow the “Health andSafety Policy <strong>of</strong> The University <strong>of</strong> West Alabama <strong>Athletic</strong> <strong>Training</strong> Program”.
