Photo: Teo KrijgsmanJust slipping your card in the machine, looking briefly at thecamera, and then walking on through passport control is nolonger science fiction at Schiphol Airport thanks to Privium.Travellers who have joined the Privium scheme no longerlose time queuing at passport control, because the uniquecharacteristics of their iris stored on their Privium membershipcard are sufficient to allow them to take the members’ lanethrough passport control. A Dutch company called Dartagnanthat specialises in airport service programs developed thetechnology for this automated iris recognition system.Compared to other forms of biometric identification (i.e. fingertip or palm recognition), iris recognition is the most reliable andeasy to use, because the iris hardly changes throughout aperson’s lifetime – even if his or her eye is damaged in someway. Once a person’s eye has been photographed, the detailsof the iris are stored only on the Privium card chip and are thencompared with the picture of the person’s eye every time heor she goes through passport control.
