In BriefElectricity and heat from keroseneKerosene is dirty, smells bad and gives off fumes duringrefuelling that are unpleasant for the surrounding residentsaround Schiphol Airport and even more so for the airport’srefuelling staff. Aircraft Fuel Supply (Schiphol’s ‘filling station’)therefore contracted a consortium of Dutch companies called‘Airport Emission Control’ (consisting of the technical servicesprovider Imtech, BioSoil and IPCO Power) to solve this problem. The consortium came up with a unique system in which thelarge quantities of kerosene fumes lost when tankers refuelaircraft are captured in a kind of gasbag and then converted by aspecial patented motor into heat and electricity. This refuellingmethod reduces the airport’s total emissions by 1 million cubicmetres of kerosene vapour and 250,000 tons of keroseneresidue, which is equivalent to 1.5% of the total amount ofkerosene pollution generated by Schiphol Airport. The amountof vapour captured rather than released into the atmospherewill increase to 7.5% if this technology is also used for thevapour released from the storage tanks. This new technologyhas attracted a great deal of interest at international trade fairs:“We have a list of twenty European airports that we hope willbuy our system, but what we really want, of course, is for theEU to make it compulsory to capture kerosene vapour,” saysMax Koolschijn of Imtech.erobles@airport-ec.comwww.airport-ec.comwww.imtech.nlwww.biosoil.comwww.ipcopower.comAirport Emission Control ensures the capture of the large quantities ofkerosene vapour released when aircraft are refuelled.Holland Gateway for the business travellerStarting in the summer of 2008, business travellers arriving at Schiphol will have their every need catered to as soon as theyset foot in the Netherlands in a business centre called ‘Holland Gateway’. They will be given advice on everything that is in anyway related to doing business in the Netherlands, including work permits and taxes. The centre is an initiative of the Ministryof Economic Affairs, Ministry of Justice, the Centre for Work and Income and the Netherlands’ Chambers of Commerce. FrankHeemskerk, the Minister of Foreign Trade, commented: “By rolling out this ‘orange carpet’ we can strengthen the Netherlands’image abroad and increase the number of foreign business people opting for the Netherlands as their Gateway to Europe.”www.hollandgateway.nl (currently in Dutch only)www.hollandtrade.comSchiphol: an award-winning airportThe Netherlands’ Schiphol Airport has been ranked highly in theinternational aviation industry and by specialist magazines suchas ‘Business Travel’ for many years and 2007 once again sawSchiphol land a number of different awards. One of these wasthe OAG Airport Marketing Award, which airport partnersPhoto Hollandse Hoogte(i.e. airlines and passengers) give to the airport that conductsthe best marketing campaign for itself and its services. Schipholreceived the award in the category for airports that handlemore than 25 million passengers a year at the ceremony inStockholm, fending off competition from other nominees suchas Hong Kong, Frankfurt, San Francisco and Munich airports.Schiphol was also among the winners at the Annual Congress ofACI Europe, the professional association of airport operators, where Schiphol was voted Best Airport in Europe amongfacilities serving over 25 million passengers: the jury praisedSchiphol for its “constant search for innovative solutions”and its “recognition of its environmental responsibilities andmaintenance of good relations with the local community”. ChiefOperations Officer Ad Rutten, who received the award on behalfof the Schiphol Group, commented: “This highlights the factthat Schiphol focuses on more than just passengers. We alsofocus on the community and our environment.”www.schipholgroup.com4 Holland Airport Technology
Check in to the Golden AgeThe Netherlands has the highest museum density in theworld – even passengers at Schiphol Airport have been ableto immerse themselves in the ultimate cultural experiencefor a number of years at the branch of RijksmuseumAmsterdam in Schiphol’s terminal building. The Rijksmuseumis the first museum in the world to have a branch at anairport and Schiphol is the first airport to have a museumin its terminal building, thus allowing passengers to takeas much time as they wish prior to their flight to enjoy thegenuine masterpieces from the Rijksmuseum’s world-famouscollection by artists such as Jan Steen, Jacob van Ruysdaeland sometimes even Rembrandt. You can find the museumon the ‘Holland Boulevard’ between Piers E and F, after youpass through passport control.www.rijksmuseum.nlPhoto Hollandse HoogteReduced aircraft separationThe National Aerospace Laboratory (NLR) studied thequestion of how to handle more air traffic without expandingthe airport and without compromising safety, and concludedthat parallel runways, converging runways and runwayscrossing each other for aircraft to land, take off or taxi wouldgo a long way towards solving the current problems. Anotheroption is to reduce aircraft separation, so that there is lesstime between one aircraft taking off and the next one, butit is then essential that systems are in place to allow for the‘wake vortex’. Now that such systems are available – both onboard the aircraft and in the air traffic control towers –that are better able to predict the position of the vortex, itwould be possible to reduce aircraft separation in certaincircumstances. The different possibilities and methodsthat can be used to identify the risks are outlined in thereport entitled ‘Risk-based decision support for new airtraffic operations with reduced aircraft separation’, which istherefore an essential tool to help airport authorities takedecisions about increasing the capacity of their airports.dfvos@nlr.nlwww.nlr.nlAir France-KLM to digitise air freightThe airline company Air France-KLM is to take part in a pilotorganised by the International Air Transport Association (IATA)to test a digital system for handling air freight that does notrequire consignment notes. IATA has selected five airports for thetest: Hong Kong, Singapore, London and Toronto, in addition toAmsterdam Schiphol. “The paper-free era for air freight beginstoday,” said Giovanni Bisignani, the Director General & CEOof IATA. “This first wave of pilots will pave the way for a globalrollout of e-freight that will eliminate the paper that costs thisindustry $1.2 billion every year. Combined, these documentscould fill 39 B747 cargo freighters each year, which makese-freight a win for the business and for the environment.” AirFrance-KLM is the largest transporter of air freight in the world,so the prospects offered by this test are good for both IATA as awhole and Air France-KLM in particular.www.klm.comPhoto Hollandse Hoogtewww.hollandtrade.com5
