Or at least it was – because that has nowchanged with the arrival of the lightweight, easily manoeuvrableMovexx, a compact user-friendly drag machine for transportingroll containers and other rolling objects up to 2,500 kg inweight from A to B easily and without the need for any physicalexertion, however uneven and steep the journey from A to B is.The drag machine is easy to hook up and can be connected toalmost any type of container or other rolling object, thanks tothe fully adjustable height of the hook.Thanks to a programming unit, acceleration, braking distance,speed moving forward, speed moving backward and tractivepower are also all fully adjustable according to personalpreference and current needs. There are now 3 Movexx dragmachines in use at Schiphol for transporting goods to theshops, and a trial involving mail carts is underway at Frankfurtairport. The Dutchcompany De Boer offered the ideal solution to the lack of spacefor baggage handling in the form of a tent that would providetemporary accommodation for a five-year period. De Boer’stemporary baggage hall came complete with fire-resistant,insulated sidewalls, lighting, air conditioning and special rapidaccess doors for the baggage trolleys. Following the successof the Schiphol project, DOHA International Airport in Qatarcontracted De Boer to put up a temporary baggage hall thatcould be used whilst a new airport was being built. As well asneeding the hall to be available quickly, it was also importantto the Qatar airport authorities that the architecture of the hallfit in with that of the existing airport buildings. De Boer hadthe perfect solution. The temporary baggage hall will ultimatelyhave been in use for five years by the time that the new airportis complete. As well as baggage handling, De Boer’s temporaryaccommodation can also house other activities – such asrestaurants – as is the case at London’s Heathrow Airport.reyndert.deboer@deboer.comwww.deboer.comDe Boer built a baggage-handling facility for Cardiff AirportThe whole airport in real time on your screenHitttraffic, a company that supplies radar systems for the shipping and aviation industries as well as the coastguard, has alreadysold its new ‘Airport Insight’ product within a year to KLM, the Schiphol Group, Copenhagen Airport and Dublin Airport. Thissystem gives airports a broad view of what piece of runway, taxiway, tunnel or any other infrastructure has been used by whattype of aircraft. This allows them to plan their expensive maintenance programmes better and save money by virtue of theability to extend the time for maintenance. On the other hand, the overall capacity will be higher, if the airport is able to keepits runways and taxiways open for a longer period of time. KLM is now using the system at Schiphol, where it is achieving clearresults already with real-time information about all aircraft. TNT well prepared for the Christmas rushThe most central point in the ‘single-hub-and-spoke’ networkestablished by TNT Express Worldwide is the European hub atBierset Airport near Liege in Belgium. Because of the explosiveincrease in air freight volume TNT has built a new distributioncentre with a surface area of 21,000 m2 in Liège. The Dutchcompany SACO is installing the centre’s fully automatic airfreighthandling system (ULDs). The system is an entirely newphenomenon, because handling by hand is still the traditionalmethod in the express sector. The centre’s handling processwill be much more efficient and the capacity per square metreof floor area will be significantly increased, thanks to this SACOsolution. SACO manufactures a total of some 250 motorisedroller belts in various designs, each of which is suitable fortransporting special air freight containers and pallets measuringup to 3.2 x 2.4 metres and weighing up to 6,800 kg. A centralIT system operates the assembly automatically, monitorsperformance and reports on the handling process. The Thomas Bradley InternationalTerminal in Los Angeles is another example of airport renovation. Trespa provideswall lining – ‘Trespa Virtuon’ – in this kind of construction and renovation project.Trespa Virtuon wall lining consists of compact high-pressure laminate (HPL) platesspecifically developed for highly demanding interiors, where the wall lining has tobe both aesthetically pleasing and top of the line as regards performance, becauseas well as looking good, airport walls need to be resistant to dirt, easy to maintainand capable of withstanding the years of people, baggage and trolleys passingthrough the airport. These requirements mean that Trespa Virtuon is mainly usedin the busiest parts of an airport. However, low maintenance was not the onlyconsideration for Thomas Bradley International Terminal in Los Angeles. As interiorarchitect Eunjo Cho explains: “Our choice of Virtuon was not just influenced by itsdurability, its attractive colours or its surface sheen. In the USA today, buildingsare being rated under the LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design)green building rating system. This combination givesthe flight information a livelierappearance and allows airportretailers to keep potential customersinside the shops for longer, thusgiving them a better opportunity tohighlight their products and servicesin real time with informationupdates on screen within 1 second.This multimedia information facilitywill usually run perfectly well onan LCD or plasma screen combinedwith a Windows XP computer andthe airport’s standard network. Thesystem is already fully developedand can be customised to suit thecustomer’s wishes.
