What’s NewLandsideAll cable work by TKFTKF is one of many companies that manufacture and supply cables, and energy and information is transferred via TKF cables ineverything from Spanish windmills to Surinamese telecom systems. However, TKF recently introduced a full-service package offeringto supply airports with all the different types of cables that they need. TKF already had years of experience with medium voltagepower cables (TKF is the main supplier of cables for Schiphol’s new pier) and the company has now added high-quality high-voltagepower cables to its portfolio for runway lighting. There is increasing demand for such a standardised cable product, because theamount of air traffic is increasing and airports are adding new runways. Consequently, TKF decided at the end of 2007 to launch awide range of cables for runway lights, all of which are fire-resistant as standard and can also be made rodent and termite resistantas an optional extra. The 6 kV lighting cable complies with all the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) standards governing runwaylighting. TKF received praise for its products from around the world at Inter Airport Europe 2007 in Munich.l.pots@tkf.nlwww.tkf.nlBaggage handling with a cake serverAmsterdam Airport Schiphol is extending its baggage handlingcapacity by investing in cutting-edge technology, such as robotsto load baggage onto carts and into containers (i.e. loadingunits). Tebodin (in the form of Henk Brandsma) was involved inthe development of this concept, which Vanderlande is now installingat Schiphol. Brandsma comments: “Until now, baggagehad always been loaded into a loading unit manually and thendriven to the aircraft. We were asked to come up with a systemthat would make it possible to process the increasing number ofitems of baggage, within the same area, using the same numberof people. The overall concept is extensively automated, andpart of that system is now a robot loader that loads the baggageinto the loading units. The robot’s conveyor belt acts as a kindof cake server to scoop up each item of baggage from the transportsystem. The baggage is then scanned before the robotplaces it in the loading unit. The information gained from thescan is used to avoid excess loading and ensure aconstant loading capacity. Schiphol’srobot baggage handler isthe first to be incorporatedinto the operating processanywhere in theworld.” The plan is toinstall six robots inthe new basement, which is due to becomplete at the end of 2010.h.brandsma@tebodin.nlwww.tebodin.comwww.vanderlande.nlNo more paperwork hassleThe old-fashioned way of flying – receiving the ticket at homeby post, going with your ticket to the airport, and queuing atthe check-in desk – has been a thing of the past for quite sometime now. What is more, if KLM has its way, things will get eveneasier for passengers. For example, whereas IATA (InternationalAir Transport Association) is aiming to replace all paper ticketswith e-tickets by mid-2008, KLM will be issuing e-tickets onlyfor all its 124 destinations as from 1 January by using not onlythe Internet and self-service machines, but also its recentlyintroduced mobile phone, blackberry or PDA e-ticket service. Ifyou receive your ticket on your mobile phone, for example, youwill receive your boarding pass on your phone in the form of abar code. Baggage labelling using RFID tags is also a reality atKLM. An RFID tag is a high-tech barcode that constantlymonitors your bag, so you can be certain that your made-tomeasuresuits and promotional gifts still arrive at precisely theright place, even if you change flights three times. In additionto enormous savings in terms of the amount of paper and thenumber of man hours required to do the job (an estimated3 billion dollars a year worldwide), all of these electronicgadgets also result in shorter queues, increased customercomfort and greater freedom of choice. For example, you canbook extra legroom or an additional free baggage allowancefrom home, and the time that you spend in the comfort of yourown home preparing your journey is time that you do not haveto spend waiting around at the airport!secr.mediarelaties@klm.comwww.klm.com22 Holland Airport Technology
