( $ The purpose of the Service section is to provide opportunity for the Friend class toexperience the joy and happiness of serving others.Two class periods plus out-of-class activity are involved in this section. Use the classperiod to select and plan the service activity and to share experiences. "By consultation with your leader, work out ways to spend at least two hoursexpressing your friendship to someone in need in your community by doingany two of the following:1. The Friends can visit a lonely older person or shut-in and brighten their daywith a bouquet of flowers, a loaf of bread or sweet roll, or other suitable article,made by the Friend if possible.3. ObjectiveTo give the Friends opportunity to participate in meeting the immediate needs ofanother, to realize the growth experience of responsibility, and at the same time,enjoy it.ExplanationToday's world is full of persons in need, from the elderly unable to maintain ayard to victims of small and large scale disasters. All may be helped byPathfinder youth.Teaching Methods1. Seek the help of the Church Community Services director to locatesomeone in need.2. You may contact other Civic organizations who specialize in communityservices for the names of people in need.3. Invite the Friends to think of other ideas of service to someone in needand permit them to choose the areas of their interest, which may includelawn mowing, running an errand or message for an older person,housework for shut-ins and yard clean-up for an elderly person.Method of TestingParticipationOption 3: Community, School, or Church ProjectObjectiveTo give the Friends opportunity to participate in service for the community, torealize the growth experience of responsibility, and at the same time, enjoy it.ExplanationThese projects may come from suggestions made by leaders in the communityor observations made by the participants.
