This segment– which includes mobile phones, mobilecomputing (notebooks, tablets), MP3 players, portable DVDs, eBooks and other relatedapplications – doubled in size during 2010 toreach $4.2 billion. However, by far the largest growth wasobserved in the TV & monitor Backlightingsegment, which Strategies Unlimited hasbroken out separately for the first time. Thissegment grew by almost a factor of ten comparedwith 2009, to reach 33% of the overallHB-LED market in 2010, or $3.56 billion.Shum described display backlighting asthe “engine for hyper growth” in the LEDindustry during 2010. The total HB-LED marketfor display backlighting (including boththe TV & monitor Backlighting segment andalso the backlighting part of the Mobile segment)was $6.7 billion.Penetration of LED backlights in TVshas increased dramatically, and manufacturersare engaged ina “beauty contest,”introducing largerand thinner screens. They are also focusingon dimming technologyfor improvedcontrast, as well asenergy savings andof course 3D. Shumpointed out twoopposite trends interms of LED consumption;one is toincrease the die areaand use multi-chippackages, whichallows a reduction inthe number of lightbars in newer TVs.However, newer modelsof high-end TVsMarket ($ billions)20181614121086420Totalmarket2009 2010 2011 2012 2013 2014 2015Source: Strategies Unlimitedare using more LEDs to ensure good picturequality, especially for 3D.In the notebook backlighting segment, unitsales of notebooks increased by 50%, whilepenetration of LED backlights also increasedby 40%. LED adoption is already very high inthis segment, so prospects for further growthare limited, unlike the tablet market whichis still in an early growth stage, despite theiPad’s success. Meanwhile, LED-backlit monitorsare growing in number, driven by theinterest generated by the TV space and alsoby the trend to adopt larger monitor screens. An additional trend in backlighting is therise of OLED screens. Shum said that “OLEDwill be making a dent very soon in the displaymarket,” especially for smartphones, where OLEDs will capture almost half themarket by 2015. While 22% unit CAGR isexpected in the smartphone market through2015, HB-LED revenue in this segment willdecrease by 3%.Lighting and other applicationsAmong the smaller market segmentsin 2010, Lighting and Automotive bothaccounted for 8% of the total, with Signs atLightingBacklighting(TVs & monitors)MobileOther6%. The signage market is expected to seehigh growth in China and India, said Shum.Meanwhile, vehicle sales rebounded in 2010,and strong sales of LEDs are expected inexterior lighting. For example, penetrationof LEDs in rear-lighting applications is lowin China, but growing rapidly. Front lighting,a relatively immature segment on aworldwide basis, is expected to see a CAGRof 29% through 2015. In vehicle interiors,instrument-panel backlighting has reachedThe Lighting market for HB-LEDs was wortharound $890 million in 2010.FIG. 3. HB-LED market growth from 2009 to 2015.very high penetration, and revenue will fallsignificantly, but this will be counteractedby growth in ambient lighting applications. The lighting market for HB-LEDs wasworth around $890 million in 2010, accordingto Strategies Unlimited. The largestsegments were architectural (27%),replacement lamps (23%) and commercial/industrial (12%), with both outdoor areaand consumer portable at 7%. “The wideavailability of 100 lm/W LEDs has madeSSL a commercial reality,” said Shum. “LEDperformance is no longer the gating factorin the SSL market.” Instead, LED luminairedesign, rather than LED performance, hasbecome the primary concern. A new reportfrom Strategies Unlimited on the market forLED luminaires is discussed on page 9.The typical efficacy of a high-performanceone-watt cool-white LED has increasedfrom around 40 lm/W in 2005 to around 130lm/W in 2010. In the same period, the costhas decreased from about $70/klm (dollarsper kilolumen) to around $11/klm.Looking aheadStrategies Unlimited expects the TV/monitorBacklighting segment to continue to bea strong engine for growth in the next twoyears, and then flatten out in 2013. Evenso, the overall CAGR for this segment isexpected to be more than 16% from 2010–2015. The Mobile segment will have a CAGRof around -3% in the same period, while thesignage and automotive segments will growby 10% and 8%, respectively.Meanwhile, lighting will become the keydriver for HB-LED market growth in 2014,as a result of the worldwide focus on energyefficiency and the phase-out of incandescentbulbs. The CAGR for HB-LED componentsfor Lighting from 2010–2015 is predictedto be 39%.16 MARCH 2011 LEDsmagazine.comPrevious Page | Contents | Zoom in | Zoom out | Front Cover | Search Issue | Subscribe | Next PageABE FMaGS
