OPERATING PRECAUTIONSSAFETY PRECAUTIONSThis is a natural gas, direct-fired, forced air heater. It's intendeduse is primarily temporary heating of buildings underconstruction, alteration or repair. If natural gas leaks from a connection or fitting, it mixes with thesurrounding air, forming a potentially explosive mixture.Obviously, gas leaks should be avoided, so set up the gassupply with utmost care. Read enclosed Odor Fade Sheet foradditional information about detecting gas leaks. Leak checknew connections or reconnections with a soap and watersolution and follow all connections instructions herein. This heater was designed for use as a construction heater inaccordance with ANSI Standard Z83.7/CGA 2.14-2000. Checkwith your local fire safety authority if you have any questionsabout your applications. Other standards govern the use of fuelgases and heat producting products in specific applications.Your local authority can advise you about these.Direct-Fired means that all of the combustion products enter theheated space. Even though this heater operates very close to100 percent combustion efficiency, it still produces smallamounts of carbon monoxide. Carbon monoxide (called CO) istoxic. We can tolerate small amounts but not a lot. CO can buildup in a heated space and failure to provide adequate ventilationcould result in death. The symptoms of inadequate ventilationare:headachedizzinessburning eyes and nose nauseadry mouth or sore throatSo, be sure to follow advice about ventilation in these operatinginstructions.Forced Air means that a blower or fan pushes the air throughthe heater. Proper combustion depends upon this air flow;therefore, the heater must not be revised, modified or operatedwith parts removed or missing. Likewise, safety systems mustnot be circumvented or modified in order to operate the heater.1. Check the heater thoroughly for damage. DO NOT operate adamaged heater.2. DO NOT modify the heater or operate a heater which hasbeen modified from its original condition.3. Use only natural gas.4. Provide at least 15 psig. gas pressure to the heater inlet(regulator inlet) while the heater is operating.5. Use an appropriate hose or flexible connector not over 10 ft.(3.05m) in length.6.Operate the heater only with the 5-20 psi regulatorprovided by the factory.7.For indoor use only. Area must be well ventilated. Figure 1.(also see "Operating Precautions").8. If at any time gas odor is detected, IMMEDIATELYDISCONTINUE operation until the source of gas has beenlocated and corrected. Read enclosed Odor Fade Sheetfor additional information about detecting gas leaks.10. Install the heater such that is is not directly exposed to waterspray, rain and/or dripping water.11. Maintain minimum clearance from normal combustiblematerial (like paper). Figure 2.12. Due to the high surface and exhaust temperatures, adultsand children must observe clearances to avoid burns orclothing ignition.13. Operate only on a stable, level surface.14. Do not use with ductwork. Do not restrict inlet or exit.15. Use only the electrical power specified. The electricalconnection and grounding must comply with NationalElectrical Code - ANSI/NFPA 70.16. Use only a properly grounded 3-prong receptacle andextension cord.17. Do not move, handle or service while hot or burning.18. Use only in accordance with local codes. When the heater is to be operated in the presence of otherpeople the user is responsible for properly acquainting thosepresent with the safety precautions and instructions, and ofthe hazards involved.Figure 2Figure 1Forced air (7000-FACV) .................................... 4 ft 2 ..................... 4 ft 2 secure them to prevent flapping or movement due to wind action.VENTILATION: Minimum openings requiredMINIMUM CLEARANCE: From normal combustible materialOpening OpeningRadiantForced AirHeater near floor near ceiling Clearance Infrared Convection Forced Air 7000-FACVInfrared ............................................................... 1 ft 2 ..................... 1 ft 2Convection (25-VC) ........................................... 1 ft 2 ..................... 1 ft 2Convection (All others) ...................................... 2 ft 2 ..................... 2 ft 2Radiant ................................................................ 2 ft 2 ..................... 2 ft 2Forced air (30K-125K BTU/HR) .......................... 1 ft 2 ..................... 1 ft 2Forced air (150-FAST, SPC-150T) .................... 2 ft 2 ..................... 2 ft 2Forced air (3500-FACV, SPC-350) .................... 3 ft 2 ..................... 3 ft 2From floor ........................................................... 0 ft .............. 0 ftFrom outlet .......................................................... 6 ft .............. 10 ftFrom sides ................ 3 ft ............ 4 ft ............... 2 ft .............. 3 ftFrom top ....................................... 6 ft ............... 3 ft .............. 5 ftFrom front ................. 6 ftFrom rear .................. 2 ftLocate 10 ft. from canvas or plastic tarpaulins or similar coverings andPage -3-

Model3500-FACNGODOR FADE WARNINGWARNINGAsphyxiation Hazard• Do not use this heater for heating human living quarters.• Do not use in unventilated areas.• The flow of combustion and ventilation air must not beobstructed.• Proper ventilation air must be provided to support thecombustion air requirements of the heater being used.• Refer to the specification section of the heater’s manual, heater dataplate, or contact the Scheu Products Company todetermine combustion air ventilation requirements of theheater.• Lack of proper ventilation air will lead to impropercombustion.• Improper combustion can lead to carbon monoxidepoisoning leading to serious injury or death. Symptom ofcarbon monoxide poisoning can include headachesdizziness and difficulty in breathing.FUEL GAS ODORLP gas and natural gas have man-made odorants added specifically for detection of fuel gas leaks. If a gas leak occurs you should be able to smell the fuel gas. Since Propane (LP) is heavier than air you should smell for the gasodor low to the floor. ANY GAS ODOR IS YOUR SIGNAL TO GO INTO IMMEDIATE ACTION!• Do not take any action that could ignite the fuel gas. Do notoperate any electrical switches. Do not pull any powersupply or extension cords. Do not light matches or any othersource of flame. Do not use your telephone.• Get everyone out of the building and away from the areaimmediately.• Close all propane (LP) gas tank or cylinder fuel supplyvalves, or the main fuel supply valve located at the meter ifyou use natural gas.• Propane (LP) gas is heavier than air and may settle in lowareas. When you have reason to suspect a propane leak, keep out of all low areas.• Use your neighbor’s phone and call your fuel gas supplierand your fire department. Do not re-enter the building orarea.• Stay out of the building and away from the area untildeclared safe by the firefighters and your fuel gas supplier.• FINALLY, let the fuel gas service person and the firefighterscheck for escaped gas. Have them air out the building andarea before you return. Properly trained service people mustrepair any leaks, check for further leakages, and then relightthe appliance for you.ODOR FADING - NO ODOR DETECTED• Some people cannot smell well. Some people cannot smellthe odor of the man-made chemical added to propane (LP)or natural gas. You must determine if you can smell theodorant in these fuel gases.• Learn to recognize the odor of propane (LP) gas and naturalgas. Local propane (LP) gas dealers will be more thanhappy to give you a scratch and sniff pamphlet. Use it tobecome familiar with the fuel gas odor.• Smoking can decrease your ability to smell. Being aroundan odor for a period of time can affect your sensitivity to thatparticular odor. Odors present in animal confinementbuildings can mask fuel gas odor.• The odorant in propane (LP) gas and natural gas iscolorless and the intensity of its odor can fade undersome circumstances.• If there is an underground leak, the movement of gasthrough the soil can filter the odorant.• Propane (LP) gas odor may differ in intensity at differentlevels. Since Propane (LP) gas is heavier than air, theremay be more odor at lower levels.• Always be sensitive to the slightest gas odor. If youcontinue to detect any gas odor, no matter how small, treat itas a serious leak. Immediately go into action as discussedpreviously.ATTENTION - CRITICAL POINTS TO REMEMBER!• Propane (LP) gas has a distinctive odor. Learn to recognizethese odors. (Reference Fuel Gas Odor and Odor Fadingsections above.• Even If you are not property trained in the service and repairof the heater, ALWAYS be consciously aware of the odors ofpropane (LP) gas and natural gas.• If you have not been properly trained in repair and service ofpropane (LP) gas then do not attempt to light heater, perform service or repairs, or make any adjustments to theheater on the propane (LP) gas fuel system.• A periodic sniff test around the heater or at the heater’sjoints; i.e. hose, connections, etc., is a good safety practiceunder any conditions. If you smell even a small amount ofgas, CONTACT YOUR FUEL GAS SUPPLIER IMMEDIATELY.DO NOT WAIT!Page -4-
