Case study 1:Canon – taking steps towards One Planet LivingCanon Europe was one of the FoundingMembers of the WWF Conservation PartnerProgramme in 1998. WWF’s ConservationPartners are a select group of multinationalcompanies which contribute major funding tosponsor WWF’s global conservation work.In 2007, Canon also launched the polar beartracker programme and Canon employeeshelped to restore the Rila National Park inBulgaria with the Pan Parks Programme.Canon is working to maximize resourceefficiency in the workplace and for otherbusinesses and consumers by designingproducts that are smaller, lighter, more energyefficient,and free from hazardous substances.‘Kyosei’, Canon’sphilosophy, means‘living and workingtogether for thecommon good’.Its on-demand SURF (Surface Rapid Fixing)technology, for example, uses a linearceramic heater and fixing film of high thermalconductivity and low thermal capacity. Thismeans that the heater activates only whenthe fixing film rotates, transferring heat viathe film to fix the image. This makes zerowarm-up time possible, resulting in a 75%reduction in energy consumption compared toconventional roller-fixing systems.The company has instituted a globalconsolidated ISO 14001 EnvironmentalManagement System certification scheme,which means that every site has a strategyfor waste recycling, reduction of energyconsumption and monitoring environmentalimpact.
