Walsh University is an
Catholic, Liberal Arts and
Founded by the Brothers of
Christian Instruction, Walsh
University is dedicated to
educating its students to
become leaders in service
to others through a valuesbased
education with an
President’s Message
As we complete our 49th year, our 46th commencement, and my 8th year as president,
we do so with a sense of profound gratitude—to God, the Brothers, our faculty and
staff, and our devoted alumni.
I have always said that the real test of the quality of an institution is the quality of its
alumni. Our nearly 9,000 alumni excel in all sorts of professions. They excel in their
servant leadership to their communities, their churches, and their families. As you read
through this edition of the Walsh Times, you will see this demonstrated time and again.
We’re about to launch the celebration of our 50th anniversary. As I look ahead to the
planned events, the opportunities to reminisce, the reunions, the banners, billboards,
video, songs, and memory book, I get excited. I know I won’t be here for the 100th
anniversary, so I am going to make this one special.
Plan ahead. Plan to attend a few events if you live fairly close. Plan to come back—bring
your family if you choose—and see the unbelievable transformation of your alma mater.
We’re inviting all the American Brothers to attend. We look forward to seeing you and
sharing stories. Make this something special you’ll do this year. It’s a chance to relive a
moment in time. It’s a chance to talk with people you may never see again.
thanks in advance for caring. if it truly is about the people, then come
when the people are here. we look forward to your visit.
Mustard seed and Mountain
“If you have faith the size of a mustard seed, you will say to this mountain, ‘Move from
here to there,’ and it will move; and nothing will be impossible to you.”
The words “Spring Break” often evoke
thoughts of partying college students, sunny
beaches and worried parents. But for a group
of 22 Walsh students, Spring Break took
on a different meaning. This past March it
became five days to make a difference in
the lives of others, in the poorest areas
of Appalachia.
Often called America’s Third World, progress
in Central Appalachia is often challenged
by stagnant local economies, inadequate
education, and communities that lack access
to human and public services. Homes are
often no more than shelter, with limited
running water or indoor plumbing, poor
08
09
insulation and crumbling foundations. For
many families, assistance with basic home
improvements and an open heart can make
all the difference between living or barely
surviving in Appalachia.
Spring Break 2009 saw the largest group of
Walsh students to volunteer in the program's
over 10 year history.
“I think the increase in participation,
especially from our freshman class, proves
that Walsh’s mission of service has been
embraced by our students,” said Mary
Niedenthal, Student Outreach Coordinator.
To accommodate the increased interest,
students were split into two separate groups
– one traveling to Mustard Seed and Mountain
in NorthFork, West Virginia, with Campus
Ministry Director Miguel Chavez, and the
other group to the Gift of Tears Catholic
Worker Farm in Spencer, West Virginia,
under the supervision of Psychology Professor
Dr. Joseph Wayand.
Preparation before the trip included
learning about the history of the region,
understanding the traditions of its inhabitants
and examining the culture deeply imbedded
in pride. Volunteer activities by both groups
included basic home repairs, interaction
with residents and preparing meals for both
volunteers and the families they served. One
group endured bitter cold temperatures
finishing an attic room so an elderly woman
could invite her grandkids and relatives
to visit and stay the night. Students were
surprised by the welcome reception they
Matthew 17:20
– Spring Break in appalachia
received. “We weren’t just volunteering
in their homes. It was like working in the
home of a friend -- by the end of our trip
we were all working alongside of each
other,” said Sarah Reed.
“My group was working in the home of a
young married couple who were expecting,”
said Maria Crookston. “We were all shocked
to learn they were our age – 17 and 19.
They had so many hardships but were so
happy with their simple life. It was actually
humbling to be in their presence. It was a
reminder of what really matters in life – not
possessions, but love.”
Students also received an education on
mountain top removal and valley fill coal
mining. “In NorthFork, the families we
visited depend on coal to heat their homes
and stay alive,” said Crookston, who
through Walsh has traveled to both Spencer
and NorthFork. “In Spencer, it’s the
complete opposite. The need for coal is
destroying the land and threatening their
entire community.”
Mountain top removal and blasting from
coal mining has destroyed entire towns with
damaging floods, landslides and the pollution
of rivers and streams essential to local
water supplies.
“It’s more than a service learning project.
Appalachian residents receive respect and
compassion, as well as assistance,” said
Niedenthal. “Our students return transformed
and passionate about conservation and aid
to Appalachia. They become the voices for
those they have served – encouraging others
to take notice and take part.”
While the quality of life in much of the
region has improved through increased
awareness and volunteer efforts over the past
decades, pockets of poverty remain today.
“It’s up to us,” said Crookston. “But the
changes that need to happen in Appalachia
may not happen in our lifetime. So, I guess
all we can do is plant the seed and hope it
will grow into something good…and that
someday it will be strong enough to sustain
itself. That’s a start.”
Three
A tale of
Com
the past year has seen the downfall of business giants such as Lehman Brothers, Bear stearns, Merrill Lynch and
the government takeover of Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac. While the economy's ups and downs have caused
most of the country sleepless nights worrying about a recession, for some this has been a year of success. three
businesses with Walsh alumni ties are proving that it is possible to not only survive but also thrive during a rocky
economic year. For all three alumni, success has hinged on an attitude that puts people before money. their
successes are examples of how to effectively merge the mission of Walsh service with daily business
operations. It is this combination that has provided personal fulfillment and professional success for Walsh
Alums Marie Cutlip, Don Caster and Richard McQueen.
For Marie Cutlip it was
the ability to dream big
that helped to launch
her financial firm Better
with the goal to become
one of the first national
CPA firms founded by a woman in the U.S.
“Through Walsh I discovered the joy in
helping others to succeed. As a team, my
staff seeks to always bring out the best in our
colleagues and we’re careful to treat every
relationship with integrity and respect,” said
Cutlip. “We believe in a corporate climate
that values trust and respect over dollars. It’s
our client’s trust that is the most important
asset we have. It’s that trust that we safeguard.”
With a focus on personal service, the team
of professionals at Better Financial
solutions includes seasoned tax experts,
certified QuickBooks Pros, and knowledgeable,
friendly support specialists. Cutlip’s experience
with the market and are now seeing a
But no matter what lies ahead, we will
always remain focused on personal attention.
It’s what sets us apart,” said Cutlip.
The evolution of the
organic food market
paired with an unwavering
to be the winning
Organics is a growing market, at the rate
of 20 percent a year. It is estimated that
Americans spend about $45 billion on
natural and organic foods and created an
at competitive prices. But for Caster, it is
not only customer relationships, but the
connections made with local growers and
suppliers that sets Raisin Rack apart in the
growing organic food competitive market.
Caster attributes the company’s success to an
unwavering focus on Raisin Rack’s founding
with the goal to serve as a resource and
to choose one product over another, we have
been able to develop a company culture
Viva Walsh V
By Annette (Smeltzer) Bernard, Class of 1998
Michelle (Kolessar) Biery, Class of 1998
For the ninth straight year, the Walsh University Alumni Association transformed the Barrette
Business and Community Center into a piece of the Vegas Strip, all to raise money for capital
improvements and student scholarships. The event had a little something for everyone,
combining simulcast horseracing, blackjack and poker tables along with continuous raffles
and a 160 item silent auction. Mix together an open bar with an all-you-can-eat Vegas style
buffet, and you’ve got a recipe for a great time.
“Viva Walsh Vegas is the one event the Alumni Association works the better part of a year
planning. It is a success thanks to the hard work of the committee and committee chairs who
have taken ownership of the event,” said Michael Reed, Class of 1987 and Alumni Board of
Trustees President. “It just keeps getting bigger and better every year! Many new alums
attended this years event, some who hadn’t been back on campus for a number of years.”
Besides homecoming, the annual Vegas Night is the largest Alumni gathering of the year.
This year, over 375 people attended the event, which through ticket sales, raffles, and
auctions raised more than $23,000. Talk about hitting the jackpot.
Anna Pugh, owner of Enviroscapes commented, “we attend a number of charitable events
each year, and Walsh Vegas is one of our favorites. There is so much excitement and energy.”
The attendees summoned Lady Luck at the poker and blackjack tables. Congratulations to
Paul Bell who took home this year’s Texas Hold-Em jackpot. Meanwhile, others were
bidding on over 160 donated items that ranged from a variety of gift baskets and Cavs and
Indian’s ticket packages to more extravagant items such as a trip to Mexico at the Mayan
Riviera, an Akron Aeros loge, and the infamous Walsh Ox Roast for 30.
In the midst of silent bidding wars, the sounds of horses going all out for 10 races could be
heard. For a mere $2 wager, attendees stepped up to the betting ring, and were instantly
able to experience the thrill of the race, cheering their horses down the backstretch.
Another big event each year is the Royale Raffle. This year’s prize was two round-trip airline
tickets good for anywhere AirTran flies. Congratulations to Rahmat Tavallali who was this
year’s lucky recipient. Many others were lucky at Big Bills where they won various raffles
worth either $50 or $100.
“We look forward to the event every year,” said Megan (Schleimer) Maloney, Class of 2003.
“It is great to return to campus, reconnect with friends, play some games and hopefully win
some money in the process.”
We would like to thank everyone who attended and contributed to the event, especially our
horseracing sponsor, Enviroscapes, and our trip raffle sponsor, AirTran. The event could
not be a success without time, donations and efforts made by the alumni, university staff,
student volunteers as well as local businesses. In the words made famous by the King himself,
“Thank You – Thank You very much!”
Looks like Elvis has officially left campus but will return for next year’s event on March 6,
2010. Mark your calendars. We look forward to seeing everyone there!
Established in 2005, The Br. Charles St. James
Scholarship is given to students that exemplify
something that the late Br. Charlie was well
known for - helping others. A true testament
to his life’s work, the scholarship has continued
to grow thanks to a seemingly infinite number
of alumni and friends who have come together
to not only fund the scholarship but also
insure that it becomes endowed and remains
a resource forever.
The scholarship began in 2005 when the
Br. Charlie Bowl-A-Thon was formed
through an initiative of Walsh’s Residence Life
staff. Each year, faculty, staff, students, friends
and alumni rally to participate in the bowling
fundraiser to replenish the scholarship funding.
Walsh’s Office of Residence Life has pledged
to raise $2000-$3000 each year for the
scholarship through the Bowl-A-Thon. In
its inaugural year, Br. Charlie rolled out the
first ball to a cheering crowd and the event
has been a success ever since.
The outpouring of support for the scholarship
continued to increase after Br. Charlie’s
December 17, 2006. Several alumni joined
and alumni to relay the sad news, and it
wasn’t long before alums, old friends and
even people Br. Charlie had met only once
asked how they could make a contribution
in his name.
From then on, the response in further
establishing the scholarship has flourished.
The recently formed Friends of Br. Charlie
Scholarship Committee has continued to
promote and sustain Br. Charlie’s legacy of
service by pledging their time to help raise
funds necessary to endow the scholarship.
For the scholarship to become endowed, a
minimum of $25,000 must be raised.
Once that level is reached, the scholarship
will become a permanent resource for
Walsh University students for years to
come. Currently more than $50,000 have
been pledged toward its funding and it has
accrued over $23,000 actual dollars. The
has set a goal to reach $75,000.
Brings Message of Forgiveness to Walsh,
October 22, 2009
On April 6, 1994, Immaculée Illibagiza,
a college student visiting home for the
Easter holiday, sought refuge in a minister’s
home with six women, just hours before a
murderous frenzy unleashed in Rwanda.
Urged to hide by her devout Catholic father,
Immaculee and the six women huddled in a
rarely used bathroom, hidden not only from
intruders but also from the minister’s large
family. The tiny room measured only three
feet by four feet. The women took turns
standing and lived off of scraps from the
minister’s table.
Witnesses had seen the women arrive at the
pastor’s house, but no one had seen them
leave. Those responsible for the violence, the
Hutus, repeatedly returned to the minister’s
home, calling and taunting Immaculee by
name as they searched. Hunted by her former
neighbors, unable to speak and barely able
to move, Immaculee found solace in her
Catholic faith, immersing herself in prayer
on the red and white rosary given by her
father just hours before she went into hiding.
As an internationally acclaimed author,
Immaculee is a Tutsi survivor of the genocide
that swept Rwanda from April to July
1994, when ordinary Hutu citizens rose up
against their ethnic rivals, the Tutsi people.
More than 800,000 people were killed
during 100 days, often by people they had
known all their lives. Nearly all of Ilibagiza’s
family - including her father, mother and
two brothers – were among those murdered.
Immaculée bravely emerged from her hiding
place to face a new life, transformed by
the discovery of God’s unconditional love.
Overcoming fear, anger and the desire for
revenge, Immaculée embodies a faith so
strong she was able to seek out and forgive
her family’s killers.
Today, Immaculée is regarded as one of the
world’s leading speakers on peace, faith, and
forgiveness. Dr. Wayne W. Dyer is quoted
as saying, “There is something much more
than charisma at work here - Immaculée not
only writes and speaks about unconditional
love and forgiveness, but she radiates it
wherever she goes.”
Immaculée’s first book, Left to Tell: Discovering
God Amidst the Rwandan Holocaust (Hay
House) was released in March of 2006. Left
to Tell quickly became a New York Times
Best Seller. To date it has been translated
into fifteen languages worldwide.
Immaculée’s story has also been made
into a documentary titled “The Diary of
Immaculée.” She has appeared on 60
Minutes, CNN, EWTN, The Aljazeera
Network, The New York Times, USA Today,
Newsday, and many other domestic and
international outlets. She was recently
featured in Michael Collopy’s “Architects
of Peace” project, which honored legendary
people like Mother Teresa, Jimmy Carter,
Nelson Mandela, and the Dalai Lama. She
has been recognized and honored with
numerous humanitarian awards including
The Mahatma Gandhi International Award
for Reconciliation and Peace in 2007.

What is a Charitable Gift Annuity?
A charitable gift annuity is a simple contract
between you and Walsh University.
In exchange for your irrevocable gift of cash, securities, or other assets, Walsh
University agrees to pay you or one to two other annuitants a fixed sum each
year for life. This type of gift might be especially attractive if you are aged 70
or above, you want to support Walsh University, and you would like to secure
an immediate stream of income for yourself or for yourself and your spouse.
The older your designated annuitants are at the time of the gift, the greater the
fixed income Walsh University can agree to pay. In addition to the stream of
fixed payments, the gift will also generate an immediate charitable income-tax
deduction. In most cases, part of each payment is tax-free, increasing each
payment’s after-tax value.
ExAMplE:
For example, Walsh Donor, aged 75, gives $15,000 in cash to Walsh University in
exchange for a 6.3% gift annuity. He receives an income-tax deduction of $6,372
