the Br. Charlie scholarship Committee: Br. Charles St. James 1932–2006 Established in 2005, The Br. Charles St. James Scholarship is given to students that exemplify something that the late Br. Charlie was well known for - helping others. A true testament to his life’s work, the scholarship has continued to grow thanks to a seemingly infinite number of alumni and friends who have come together to not only fund the scholarship but also insure that it becomes endowed and remains a resource forever. The scholarship began in 2005 when the Br. Charlie Bowl-A-Thon was formed through an initiative of Walsh’s Residence Life staff. Each year, faculty, staff, students, friends and alumni rally to participate in the bowling fundraiser to replenish the scholarship funding. Walsh’s Office of Residence Life has pledged to raise $2000-$3000 each year for the scholarship through the Bowl-A-Thon. In its inaugural year, Br. Charlie rolled out the first ball to a cheering crowd and the event has been a success ever since. The outpouring of support for the scholarship continued to increase after Br. Charlie’s CONTINUING HIS LeGACy passing due to Parkinson’s Disease on December 17, 2006. Several alumni joined together at Walsh making calls to friends and alumni to relay the sad news, and it wasn’t long before alums, old friends and even people Br. Charlie had met only once asked how they could make a contribution in his name. From then on, the response in further establishing the scholarship has flourished. The recently formed Friends of Br. Charlie Scholarship Committee has continued to promote and sustain Br. Charlie’s legacy of service by pledging their time to help raise funds necessary to endow the scholarship. For the scholarship to become endowed, a minimum of $25,000 must be raised. Once that level is reached, the scholarship will become a permanent resource for Walsh University students for years to come. Currently more than $50,000 have been pledged toward its funding and it has accrued over $23,000 actual dollars. The Friends of Br. Charlie Scholarship Committee has set a goal to reach $75,000. About Br. Charlie Br. Charlie was born in Burlington, VT., on June 29, 1932, the son of the late George and Laurette (Senesac) St. Jacques. He was a graduate of St. Anthony School and Cathedral High School in Burlington, completed a year at St. Michael’s College, Colchester, VT., and then began his formal training as a religious brother at La Mennais College in Alfred, Maine. His year as a novice was spent at the Brothers’ novitiate at Oka, Quebec, Canada. His final profession was in 1958. From 1955 to 1970, Brother Charles was a high school teacher at the Brothers’ schools in Alfred; Fall River, Mass.; and Detroit. While in Detroit, he earned a master’s degree in library science. From 1970 to 1974, Brother St. James was associate director of vocations for the Archdiocese of Detroit while serving as vocation director for the Brothers until 1977. At the same time he served a term as executive director for the National Conference of Religious Vocation Directors of Men, with offices in Chicago. He received a master’s degree in Pastoral Studies from Loyola University, Chicago. Br. Charlie spent 13 years in campus ministry at Loyola, prior to coming to Walsh in 1992, where he continued to minister to college students by his presence, his ability to listen, and his assistance helping students network with others. Walsh presented Brother Charles with a Lifetime Achievement Award in 2006. Br. Charlie is survived by two sisters, Gabrielle Havreluk of East Fairfield, VT., and Suzanne Fisher of Treasure Island, FL., as well as nine nieces and nephews, and several cousins.
