Koser Olivieri Dedication Congressman John Boccieri 02 03 CAmpus NEWs professor Earns National Award for Iodine Chemistry – Walsh Featured in International publication The American Chemistry Society honored Walsh professor Dr. Gerald F. Koser with the prestigious national Award for Creative Research and Applications of Iodine Chemistry sponsored by SQm S.A. Dr. Koser presented a keynote address and received his award from the American Chemical Society at the national meeting in Salt Lake City during the week of march 23rd. In addition, Dr. Koser and Walsh received international attention when a written profile of his award was included in the February 9 edition of the international magazine Chemical & Engineering News (C&EN) published by the American Chemical Society. “This is a very prestigious award for Dr. Koser and we are honored to have him teaching at Walsh University,” said michael Dunphy, Chair of the Division of mathematics and Sciences. “As a consequence of having Jerry on board, we now have Organo-Iodine chemical research at Walsh.” Dr. Koser retired from The University of Akron in 2005 as a distinguished professor emeritus. he was recruited by Dr. michael Dunphy to teach as an adjunct Walsh professor in fall 2006. Walsh Celebrates Dedication of the Fred Olivieri Family Towers Walsh University formally dedicated the Fred Olivieri Family Towers in a special ceremony on Tuesday, April 14. The ceremony was followed by tours of the facility. Completed in 2007, the Fred Olivieri Family Towers is a four-story residence hall that offers single-room, double-room, and suite style accommodations for 156 upper-class students. The facility offers a spacious common area, computer lab, classroom, fitness center, seventyfive seat movie theater and a convenience store offering grab-and-go foods. Business Club Welcomes Congressman John Boccieri The Walsh University Business and Communication Club hosted Congressman John Boccieri of the 16th District as the keynote speaker during its 44th Annual Scholarship Luncheon on Friday, April 17. Over 300 people attended the luncheon to hear the Congressman speak about the local economy. Congressman John Boccieri was sworn into office as the United States Representative to Ohio’s 16th Congressional District on January 6, 2009. he represents Wayne, Stark, and southern portions of medina and Ashland Counties. he succeeded former Congressman Ralph Regula in office. The Business and Communication Club is the largest club on the Walsh campus. The Annual Scholarship Luncheon is an opportunity to invite the local business community to Walsh to share insight into today’s business world and to raise needed scholarship dollars for deserving business and communication students. Walsh Receives Grant for Center for College Readiness U.S. Rep. John Boccieri recently announced that Walsh will receive a $333,000 grant for the Center for College Readiness, through the Omnibus Appropriations Bill. This legislation is the result of negotiations between both house and Senate leadership.
The Center for College Readiness is a college preparation program aimed at improving the college readiness of area high school students and assisting at risk college students who arrive on campus unprepared for academic success. The program provides students with the support and information they need to make college a viable part of their future. Business students Invited to meet the International president of Rotary Rather than following a set syllabus, the two classes of BUS 304 have consolidated to form one corporation while completing two separate and distinct outreach plans for the Rotary Clubs of Cleveland and Canton. In celebration of their 100th anniversary and as a gift to the City of Cleveland and its youth, the Rotary Club of Cleveland has agreed to be the port Organizer of the 2010 Tall Ships Festival. The Tall Ships Youth Sail Training program is being designed to provide life, interpersonal and leadership skills for students from the Cleveland metropolitan School District, through classroom, dockside and “on the water” training. In addition, the class created a marketing strategy to sell 500 pro Football hall of Fame Dream Weekend raffle tickets for the Canton Rotary. Organized by the Canton Rotary Charitable Fund, proceeds from this special program will benefit participating Rotary Clubs throughout the United States. In honor of their hard work over the semester, the students were extended the unique invitation to meet Rotary International president D.K. Lee, hosted by the Rotary Club of Cleveland in march. New Board members Appointed and Emeritus status Granted to Four Walsh University recently appointed two new members, Fr. James Sullivan, O.p., and msgr. James Clarke, to the Walsh University Board of Directors. In addition, former Board members were granted the honor of emeritus Status. honored with the title Director emeritus were Thomas Schervish, Charles Tyburski, Virginia Jeffries, and Sr. Judith Karam. Walsh Hosts Football’s First Junior World Championship this June In June, Walsh will serve as residence and practice site for eight international football teams from four continents competing in the 2009 International Federation of American Football (IFAF) Junior World Championship. Fawcett Stadium will host all 12 IFAF Junior World Championship Games. The historic tournament marks football’s first world championship among high school-aged national teams. Five of the University’s residence halls will house the tournament’s 360 teenage athletes. national teams that have clinched IFAF Junior World Championship berths include: Canada, France, Germany, Japan, Sweden and the United States. USA Football’s Junior national Team, representing the United States and led by head coach ChUCK KYLe of Cleveland St. Ignatius high School, also will conduct practices on the Walsh University fields approximately two weeks prior to the tournament.
