E/N/C/V March 14-20, 2012Young-at-heart seniors bring comedy, music and dancePROVIDED BY THE VENICE THEATREThe Silver Foxes Follies, a fun-filled varietyshow that plays to crowded houses eachyear, will be presented today throughSunday at the Venice Theatre.The Silver Foxes are a professionally-directedvolunteer performers who have been entertainingaround the area for 20 years. Bringing song,dance and laughter to community centers,religious groups and clubs throughout SarasotaCounty, they currently reach 5,000 audiencemembers each season. Every March theyproduce a full-length variety show – “The Follies”– which helps raise money for Venice Theatre’seducation and outreach programs.Joe Simmons, veteran actor and director, is theartistic director of the Silver Foxes. “The Follies’combination of singing,dancing and fast-pacedcomedy never gets old,” Simmons said. JasonSilver Fox Singers performing The Beach Boys’ “Kokomo” at last year’s Follies.Brenner, a frequent musical director and performerat the Venice Theatre, is resident musicaldirector of the Foxes.Evening performances are at 8 p.m. Wednesdaythrough Saturday and at 2 p.m. Sunday.Reserved seats are $24 and can be purchasedonline at www.venicestage.com or by callingthe box office at 941-488-1115. Oaks.J.T. was inspired to write the music, lyrics, anddialogue for “Star Queen” by his preacher fatherTommy. Tommy and J.T. collaborated in writing thebook of the show as they have on more than adozen other musical theater pieces.Tommy was the first person in the world toreceive a master’s degree in storytelling, earnedat East Tennessee University following his bachelor’sfrom Johnson Bible College and a Master’sfrom Emmanuel School of Religion. He continuedwith his focus on English, education andstorytelling for a doctorate from the University ofTennessee.J.T. grew up hearing Tommy preach, bringingout the humor in Bible stories and frequentlycomment that the book of Esther should be amusical. “Star Queen” unfolded when J.T. wentto the University of Tennessee, Knoxville, to studyjazz but ended up focusing on writing for thetheater.This show includes about 20 musical numbersranging from pop to country, lounge-lizard styleballads and Latin-fueled tunes to songs withfull-out Broadway belting.
