March 14-20, 2012 E/N/C/V Let’s Go! 25SPOTLIGHTPlacida Seafood Festival supports Project GraduationBY CHRIS KOURAPISSUN CORRESPONDENTThe Placida Seafood Festival scheduled forSaturday-Sunday on the grounds of theFishery Restaurant is by far the largestfundraiser for Lemon Bay High School’s 2012Project Graduation celebration. Arts and crafts, abeverage tent, and of course, fresh seafood andother food items will be offered for sale. Michael Hirstand the Caribbean soul band Impulse will providelive entertainment. Admission is free. Parking is $3.During the two-day event, 45 parents andcommunity volunteers will assist with parkingfor festival attendees. All parking proceeds willbenefit Project Graduation.Steve Gardiner, vice president of the boardfor Lemon Bay Project Graduation, explainedthat fundraising and donations from the communityhave been low due to the downturn of theeconomy this year. He hopes that “The PlacidaSeafood Festival will be the single greatest opportunityto raise funds for the 2012 graduationnight event.”Project Graduation is an all-night party forgraduating seniors of Lemon Bay High School.It is a well supervised, drug and alcohol-freecelebration held in a safe and secure environment.Immediately following the LBHS graduationceremony, the 300 plus graduates will be treatedto an evening of fun at the Englewood UnitedMethodist Church Fellowship Hall located at 700E. Dearborn St., Englewood. Graduates can expecta surprise theme, non-stop games, food, beverages,entertainment, smoothies, and prizes. The eventbegins around 10 p.m. and ends at 6 a.m.Parents and volunteers are making sure thatProject Graduation, the last time that the LBHSclass of 2012 will be celebrating together as agroup, will be a unique and memorable experience.Chaperones are willing to go 36 hourswithout sleeping. “It’s a lot of work,” according toGardiner, “but we all receive great gratificationfrom what we do, that is to protect the children ofEnglewood and assure that all goes well.”For more information or to make a donation toProject Graduation contact Lemon Bay High School,Project Graduation, Inc.
