What’s more, both types of transmissionalso impress with their intuitive and ergonomic operability.6-speed manual transmission. The 4-cylinder models(except E 250 CDI 4MATIC, E 300 BlueTEC HYBRID andE 250) are paired with a 6-speed manual transmission asstandard, offering impressively short and precise shifttravel and facilitating sporty, rapid gear changes. Here thegear ratios and the rear axle ratio are optimally tuned tothe engine output in each case. A display on the instrumentcluster indicates recommended gear changes to furtherencourage a highly efficient driving style.7G-TRONIC PLUS. The E 250 CDI 4MATIC, E 300 BlueTECHYBRID and E 250 models, as well as the V6 and V8 models,are equipped with the 7G-TRONIC PLUS 7-speed automatictransmission as standard. The transmission is controlledusing the DIRECT SELECT lever, while the driver is able toinfluence the gear changes using the steering-wheel shiftpaddles. The seven forward gears allow an optimum enginespeed at all times, thus helping to reduce fuel consumption.Compared to the preceding 7G-TRONIC transmission,the electrohydraulic control unit has been enhanced, whilethe engine and transmission software has been optimised,resulting in further improved gearshift dynamics and gearshiftquality. Furthermore, the 7G-TRONIC PLUS givesthe driver more direct vehicle response to changes in theaccelerator pedal position.ECO start/stop (standard). The engine is automaticallyswitched off whenever the vehicle is at a standstill – inthis simple way the ECO start/stop function achieves aconsiderable reduction in fuel consumption and emissions,for instance when stopped in a traffic jam or at traffic lights.
