5 0 Drive system & chassis Safety Comfort AMGIn the event of danger: PRE-SAFE ® anticipatory occupantprotection system (optional). The preventive occuptantprotection system is able to recognise critical driving situationsin advance and, as a precaution, it can activate safetysystems. This is based on PRE-SAFE ® continuously monitoringsensor data from systems like the ESP® 1 and BAS,and can thus, for example, analyse driving situations suchas oversteer/understeer as well as emergency braking. Ifa critical driving situation is detected, in fractions of secondsthe belts on the front seats can be reversibly tensionedand the side windows automatically closed, so that the beltsand airbags are able to deploy their full protective effectshould an impact occur. In addition to this the new, extendedPRE-SAFE ® PLUS 1 (integral component of the optionalDriving Assistance package Plus 1 ) can also use a radar sensorin the rear bumper to detect potential hazards in therear area and initiate additional, effective safety measures. If an impact is imminent, the rear indicators flash at a fasterfrequency to warn the traffic behind. Furthermore, preventivemeasures such as stalling can be activated to reduce therisk of secondary collisions and lessen the forces exertedon the occupants by reducing the forwards jolt.1Integral component of Mercedes-Benz Intelligent Drive. More on page 36In the event of danger: COLLISION PREVENTION ASSIST 1(standard). The system can detect insufficient distancebetween the car and the vehicle in front and then give thedriver an audible warning. If there is a risk of a collisionwith a slower moving or stopping vehicle within definedspeed ranges, the driver receives audible and visual warnings.During braking, Active Brake Assist can provide the brakingforce required to avoid an imminent collision or at leastreduce its severity. The PRE-SAFE ® anticipatory occupant protection system can recognisecritical driving situations and initiate measures to protect the occupantsIn the event of danger: BAS PLUS with Cross-TrafficAssist 1 (integral component of the optional Driving Assistancepackage Plus 1 ). The foresighted braking assistancesystem BAS PLUS 1 calculates the braking pressure which isrequired in order to prevent a collision or reduce the severityof the accident. It then initiates partial or even full braking ifthe driver does not hit the brakes hard enough. BAS PLUScan also intervene to provide assistance in situations involvingcrossing vehicles. Plus the system can detect pedestriansin the area ahead of the vehicle and augment thebraking power applied when the driver presses the brakepedal if necessary. In the event of danger: PRE-SAFE ® Brake 1 with activepedestrian protection (integral component of the optionalDriving Assistance package Plus 1 ). As a three-stage warningand braking system PRE-SAFE ® Brake is able to intervenebefore an impending rear-end collision at speeds of up to200 km/h: if the driver fails to react to a first warning, autonomouspartial braking is performed. The system can thentrigger autonomous emergency braking if there is still noreaction from the driver. Autonomous braking can help preventhead-to-tail collisions with stationary vehicles andcollisions with pedestrians in the area ahead of the car atspeeds of up to 50 km/h.
